Due to my blood pressure being high and a previous birth at 27 weeks due to pre eclampsia, there is a possibility I'll be started on labetalol in 48 hours after my next blood pressure profile....has anyone been on this medication before and can tell me what to expect? Were you able to go to term?

@caitlinn, I can’t tell you whether or not I’ll go to term but I’m currently 25+2 and have been on Labetalol for 2 weeks.

It has managed to keep my BP at a normal level thus far. I didn’t have Pre E in my first pregnancy and have been told that it’s unusual to have it during your second if this is the case. There’ve been no real side effects for me.

Hi.

I was on it from around 32 weeks in my last pregnancy. No side effects as far as I recall. Baby did come slightly early (38+4) but I wasn't induced X

I've been on it twice, and got to 40 weeks both times. No side effects for me or for baby, although they do monitor the baby's blood sugars once they arrive.

I was on it from half way through my last pregnancy. But I have essential hypertension pre-pregnancy anyway and as my blood pressure rose I was switched from methydopa to labetalol. I ended up developing pre-eclampsia (nothing to do with the labetalol) and was induced at 35 weeks. By the end of the pregnancy I was on methydopa, labetalol and nafedipine and was slowly weaned off nafedapine and methydopa after birth but continued to take labetalol 400mg twice daily. The only side effect was in hospital after giving birth. While trying different doses my bp got too low and I nearly passed out. Other than that me and baby were totally fine.

Thanks, started tablets yesterday due to blood pressure, I've been told to go in twice a week for BP check and urine dipped from now on

I took it from 37 weeks on dd2. I made it to 40 weeks. I had to wean off it after dd was born. I suffered from dizziness after birth. My blood pressure was all over the place but gradually reduced dose over 6 weeks and my blood pressure got back to normal.

Should have also said that the doctors found it difficult to stabilize my blood pressure. I had to go in for monitoring every few days and ended up being admitted several times. That was very stressful with toddler dd at home.

I was put on this while in hospital being induced with DS1. It meant after birth he had to have regular blood sugar level testing every couple of hours for a day or two, not something they told me about in advance. Just wanted to flag to you as it felt like they were always taking blood from him!

No side effects for us though.

Starsandthemoonx · 26/02/2019 09:39

I have been on labetalol since about 6 weeks pregnant as had sudden eclampsia and pre eclampsia I am now 26 weeks no side effects and seems to be managing bp well x

First full day of them today, can say I feel no different.... back to pau on Thursday for another blood pressure profile so fingers crossed they're working... need her to stay in for a few weeks longer! Thanks for all your replies

Yeah I didn’t take labetalol with my first, just nephidipine because I have asthma but labetalol is quicker acting. I’m 28+4 atm and I have a low dose of labetalol for when my bp spikes. I can see a difference within an hour. My first was born at 35 weeks my bp spiked with my second around the same time, they started it and he made it to 39 🥰. But he did have blood sugar problems after birth which affected my ability to bf.
