Hi all, I saw my physio yesterday and I happened to mention that I had really bad groin pain on both sides and struggled to stand on one leg easily. She said that I needed to see a doctor (which I am tomorrow) as it can in some cases be early signs of a condition that she couldn't remember the name of. Does anyone on here know what she could mean? Apparently you can end up on crutches before the birth or even hospitalised. I'm 26+3 weeks and 39 years old if that's relevant? Any help will be gratefully received! Thanks xx

Perhaps this?

Check out the pelvic partnership website for tips on how to deal with it. Don't do things that cause discomfort (in my case that's walking and moving).

Ironically, all gp will do (or you can text your midwife) is refer you to physio!!! Make sure it's a pregnancy physio (the one you saw doesn't sound like the right person).

Sounds like SPD. I had it in my second pregnancy. I didn't end up on crutches and managed to carry on working in quite an active job until around 34/35 weeks. It can be varied person to person though obviously.

Sounds to me like spd. I hate with my last 2 pregnancy's it was awful. But goes once baby's are here.

Blackboot2 · 20/02/2019 12:56

I'm 27 weeks and on crutches for SPD. Sounds like it.

Bunnybaubles · 20/02/2019 13:46

I agree, SPD. I was on crutches half way through my last pregnancy. 1st time I had it I got it around 7 months, my pubic bones were grinding off each other. My last pregnancy I was about 12 weeks when it started. I had it everywhere, my lower back, hips, thighs, pubic area and thigh joints. Everything was unstable.

Also check out PGP - pelvic girdle pain which pretty much refers to the same type of problems with the whole pelvis area. That and SPD are often referred to as the same now.

If the pain gets so bad you can get strong co-codomol or dihydrocodeine prescribed as well as physio, support belts and crutches.

BillyAndTheSillies · 20/02/2019 15:44

Sounds like PGP/SPD. I was signed off work from 20 to 24 weeks with it. In that time I had intensive physio therapy sessions every day for two hours.

Got me back on my feet and commuted an hour each way until I was 38 weeks. Very slowly, and in a lot of pain but not enough to stay home. The time I was signed off though I couldn't sit down, couldn't stand up, couldn't turn over in bed. It was absolute agony.

If you've got a local Facebook page, see if anyone can recommend a physio who specialises in pregnancy. Mine didn't do exercises, he used light therapy to strengthen the ligaments and I credit it with being able to walk for the rest of my pregnancy.

Thanks for all of your replies, much appreciated. Sounds like some proper physio is on the cards xxx

Pelvic girdle pain. Just after xmas mine was really bad and thought I'd need to use crutches towards the end of my pregnancy. But now at 38 weeks it seems to have eased off a little. But told the midwife and now have appt to see the physio by next fri. But as im close to my due date who knows if l will make the appt.

jackio2205 · 20/02/2019 22:23

Defo SPD. I had it before but it took maybe 4ish months to go after baby? I have it again with this pregnancy.

My tips are-
See a physio
If you have to go upstairs/get up from seated pull yourself up using hands
Sleep with pillow between legs to align your hips
Do pelvic floor exercises
Stay mobile within reason, don't do nothing, this will make you stiff and soooo much worse!
Im no expert but both times suffered from 8 weeks and after so I spoke to a looooot of people about it.

Good luck! X
