Painful heartburn and acid. What helps?

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and I've been struggling with heartburn and avid reflux for months now, and its getting worse.
I've started being sick in my sleep and the pain is awful.

Rennies used to work but don't anymore.
My consultant prescribed Ranitidine which she said was the best, it worked wonders for a week and now does absolutely nothing.

At night, I still take my Ranitidine, prop myself up to sleep and pop Rennies all night.

Has anyone else had this problem and what helps?

Giving birth!

Sorry Grinbut it does instantly vanish.

Go back to your doctor and ask for Omeprazole. I found Gaviscon double action tablets worked for longer than Rennies too.

A lot of pharmacists won't let you have gaviscon.
I used the peptac liquid in large quantities!!

Dohee · 20/02/2019 10:17

A thing called SilicolGel. It cost about £16 for a pretty small bottle, but it works.
I used to drink Gaviscon like water basically.
When baby arrives you won't have any though!

I'm the same and not allowed any meds for it so I've been trying peppermint tea for two days now. It's not completely cured it but I've been able to sleep x

Thank you guys. Ill have a look at those and ask my midwife tomorrow.

The pharmacy gave me some peptac medicine but it didn't help at all 😢

I found Omeprezole works much better than ranitidine for me. Ask gp for that!

snoopy18 · 20/02/2019 11:07

You can also try Apple cider vinegar in water I found it has helped me a lot as I not like to take gaviscon too much. Worth a shot :)

silvertongue · 20/02/2019 14:55

I'm exactly the same - waking up choking on acid/vomit. I have ranitidine and it takes away some of the acid pain but it doesn't really help with the vomit. I sleep propped up and try to eat less on an evening and don't eat a few hours before bed.

I think omeprazole helps more than ranitidine but I can't take it due to weird side effects. I had GORD prior to my pregnancy and managed it by keeping weight off my stomach and not eating trigger foods. But the baby bump has made it come back with a vengeance!

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 20/02/2019 14:57

Only the orange Rennies worked for me.

Niketan · 20/02/2019 15:03

Vanilla ice cream. I know it sounds weird but a couple of spoonfulls after dinner really help me.

Also refresher sweets apparently work. I haven't tried them but others have recommended them!

Smaddii · 20/02/2019 15:45

I'm the same, it's awful - the best nights I've had have been after eating full fat Greek yoghurt a couple of hours before bed! Tried it a few nights ago and touch wood I've slept better and had no vomiting for the first time in months! That's as well as rennies and ranitidine xx

Adviceplease1234 · 20/02/2019 16:51

Oh I feel your pain. It's horrible!

I read that not eating for 3 hours before bed can help and for me it really has. It hasn't stopped it but it's made it bearable so I've stopped having to take gaviscon in the middle of the night.

I'm interested why some of you have been told you can't have gaviscon? I've been told it's fine.

Bellafreud · 20/02/2019 16:54

Another vote for Omeprazole! My dr has put it on repeat for me...

oldsewandsew · 20/02/2019 16:57

Omeprazole is the only thing that worked for me. Ranitidine did nothing. My GP was very reluctant to put me on omeprazole, but when I said I was being woken up choking, and vomiting, he agreed. My pregnancy was a breeze after that! The first 6 months were hell!
