If it's vegan. I craved sushi a lot in my first few weeks (with lots of soy sauceGrin). I went to Yo Sushi a couple of times and just had vegan stuff so that the filling is cucumber or avocado rather than raw fish. Also no beef sashimi in my opinion.

avacadooo · 19/02/2019 11:55

Go to yo sushi it's safe there cause they freeze the fish before hand 👍
Now I want California rolls 😫😂

Karigan195 · 19/02/2019 11:56

If it’s cooked and not one of the banned fish. :)

Karigan195 · 19/02/2019 11:57

Yeah and I want them too lol

Karigan195 · 19/02/2019 11:58

Ps yo sushi are very good and will help you identify what is cooked and what is raw. Plus their tempura crab and miso soup are to die for.

What about Waitrose sushi...?

I find the nhs advice is comprehensive.

From the website

It's fine to eat raw or lightly cooked fish in dishes like sushi when you're pregnant, as long as any raw wild fish used to make it has been frozen first.
This is because, occasionally, wild fish contains small parasitic worms that could make you ill. Freezing kills the worms and makes raw fish safe to eat. Cooking will also kill them.
Certain farmed fish destined to be eaten raw in dishes like sushi, such as farmed salmon, no longer need to be frozen beforehand.
This is because farmed fish are very unlikely to contain parasitic worms as a result of the rearing methods used. If you're unsure, contact the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for advice.
Lots of the sushi sold in shops is not made at the shop. This type of sushi should be fine to eat – if a shop or restaurant buys in ready-made sushi, the raw fish used to make it will have been subject to an appropriate freezing treatment.
If you're in any doubt, you might want to avoid eating the kinds of sushi that contain raw fish, such as tuna.
The safest way to enjoy sushi is to choose the fully cooked or vegetarian varieties, which can include:
cooked seafood – for example, fully cooked eel (unagi) or shrimp (ebi)
vegetables – for example, cucumber (kappa) maki
avocado – for example, California roll
fully cooked egg
If a shop or restaurant makes its own sushi on the premises, it must still be frozen first before being served. If you're concerned, ask the staff.
If you make your own sushi at home, freeze the fish for at least 4 days before using it.

So basically, Waitrose sushi is fine

ThanksItHasPockets · 19/02/2019 14:06

California rolls don’t usually contain raw fish - the filling is usually crab and avocado. Nevertheless, pretty much any raw fish sushi that you buy in the EU will be made with previously frozen fish so it will be absolutely fine. Keep an eye on your consumption of tuna because of the mercury levels.

DoveGreylove · 19/02/2019 17:07

Parent19876 I haven't eaten any sushi yet in my pregnancy (21 weeks) but I ADORE waitrose sushi and I miss it so much.

I reckon you can have california rolls as they contain cooked crab.

Some people have even said to me that you should avoid sushi not just because of the raw fish but because of the rice too?? Apparently it could make me sick?!

StargazyDrifter · 19/02/2019 17:20

I had this for lunch today! Cooked crab, so fine in terms of parasites. But probably not altogether good for you when you consider how far away a crabstick is from actual crab. It's more chemicals than anything else. Still a tasty occasional treat, imo. 🦀

anniehm · 19/02/2019 17:22

Crabstick or prawns are cooked so fine, avoid raw fish ideally though I admit to eating through pregnancy!

CookieWaffle · 19/02/2019 17:58

To clarify, the fish sticks in California rolls are usually white fish anyway so if you're avoiding shellfish you're fine. We make our own sushi, I buy the thin sliced salmon from tesco. Its usually frozen for a few daya before we use it anyway.

StargazyDrifter · 19/02/2019 18:07

CookieWaffle aaah that's the bit I was missing about the crab stick! Mmm "highly pulverised while fish", with some chemicals to bind. Still tasty.

spugzbunny · 19/02/2019 18:17

Sushi is absolutely fine as long as it's been frozen before hand. Even the raw stuff! There's no 'in my opinion' or 'to be safe' about it! You can eat it, just the same as you would before.

ThanksItHasPockets · 19/02/2019 18:41

avoid raw fish ideally

No! No need if it has been previously frozen, as per NHS advice above.

Waggily · 19/02/2019 19:58

Supermarket sushi is fine. It was one of my short lived cravings, I had it twice a day for two weeks!
