Best way to not gain too much weight when pregnant

Exactly that really. Now that the first trimester is over I want to keep control on the weight gain. It’s flown up first trimester with the usual OMG this baby loves carbs and feeling sick every time I felt hungry but now that’s easing off I want to get a grip on it.

When I had my son I put on far too much and I found it very depressing and hard work. Determined not to do that this time.

So any tips please? I know I can’t really cut out as need to be healthy so what’s the best way?

I've only put on a stone over this pregnancy and it's just through the normal "boring stuff" unfortunately that has kept it at bay to be honest. I eat healthy portions of healthy food, and I still exercise. I was a carb monster for the first 16 ish weeks due to nausea, but once that faded I could eat a more balanced diet. There are guidelines around how much weight you put in is healthy in pregnancy determined by your weight beforehand so could be worth seeking advice from midwife and doctors 😊

I think a lot of it depends what size you are when you start. I was small and slim and put on a lot of weight according to the scales, but I don’t think I looked especially fat - it was all baby, some fat for milk reserves and water. I am heavier now than I was pre-children but again I don’t think I look fat now (but I’m bigger than I was, those pre-baby jeans don’t fit). Obviously you need to be making healthy diet choices but I don’t think you should be hungry and pregnant. And for me, heartburn and reflux kept a continuous eating pattern for the whole of pregnancy.

Some people will lose weight when pregnant - usually those who had more to lose to begin with, and also those with hyperemesis or gestational diabetes

Have you tried tracking what you eat to make sure you don't overeat? Myfitnesspal is good, doesn't give you 'diet' calories and takes into account how active you are. At 14 weeks my digestion is sluggish so I've mostly been using it to track fibre.

I'm going by the nhs advice that you don't need any additional calories for the first 6 months, and an additional 200 a day in the last trimester, which isn't much! For me it's the equivalent of a slice of toast with butter and jam. Pre-pregnancy I thought I'd be able to eat much more!!

My bmi pre baby was smack bang in the middle of the green. Don’t remember the number but I remember the graph thing lol.

I usually exercise a lot but have to say its slipped in the first trimester with all the fatigue and morning sickness. Intend to start again now that’s abating a bit.

I put on 10kg throughout my pregnancy. But I didn't eat more than usual.

I literally just ate when I was hungry and didn't go for the whole "you're eating for two" nonsense. I found I got full really quickly - first 16 weeks I felt like I ballooned but after that I found I wasn't overly hungry - I also found walking everywhere helped I couldn't do vigorous exercise or even yoga/swimming so I walked. I put on 7lbs during my pregnancy which I was surprised about as pre baby and attempting to get pregnant I was an 18/20 pre baby 14 and went to a 16 with the bump. Post baby's arrival however is another story Blush

I got HG and have lost two stone, so I am no help!
Feel like it will catch up with me and more soon enough!

Can't go on your thighs if it didn't go in your mouth.
