Gestational Diabetes Test

Getting myself a bit worked up about this and have it next week! I'm being tested because I'm "obese", and I'm pleased they are checking. But since I've been pregnant I've only been able to drink ice cold water and only through a straw. Everything else makes me gag and vomit pretty instantly. I'm worried I won't be able to drink it or I will and then I'll be sick straight away and have to do it again! Has this happened to anyone? Also feeling hormonal, angry with myself for getting this big and now putting baby at risk. I started slimming world straight away after my booking appt and have lost weight, I'm now 28 weeks and 9lb down overall (and if we take away baby and placenta, fluid etc I'm thinking I've probably managed to shift a fair bit of fat?). Do you think this will have reduced my chances of having GD or does it not work like that? Struggling to find answers online cxc

First of all well done on losing some weight. That is an achievement any time let alone when you are pregnant. Losing weight will lower your risk but it’s not black and white and there are so many other factors that can increase your chances of getting GD such as family history and ethnicity. If you do get it you will be monitored more regularly and risk to baby will be minimal. As for the test itself I remember it being a lucosade type drink (the bright orange original flavour one). It seemed like quite a lot to drink. I’m sure you can’t be the only one in your position of struggling to drink the solution. x

Thanks Terri, I have no other risk factors, just the weight. No diabetes at all in the family or anything like that, didn't have it with my son. So just trying to remain positive. Thank you, the weightloss hasn't been easy at all but definitely glad I've done it! 3rd trimester now so expecting to gain but at least it will be managed. I'm going to take some straws with me, hold my nose and hope for the best! Just wondered what happened if I was sick whether I'd have to have it again and keep going until I wasn't sick any more 🙈

Why would you need straws? Were you not given the drink sachet and the blood test paperwork already?

This is what I was given (in England): www.gpsupplies.com/rapilose-ogtt-glucose-solution-300ml-pack-of-24

I was told I had to fast for 12 hours overnight, only allowed water if necessary and then to drink all of the drink within 10 minutes. After drink was finished I had to go to the hospital and have my bloods taken within 1.5 hours of the end time of drinking the drink.

The midwife also said that if I was sick that I would need to call them up and collect another drink and do the test again another day. Also that if I didn’t manage to get to the hospital and get the blood taken within 1.5 hours after, then the test would be void.

There is a sheet that comes with the drink and I know in the USA they do theirs differently as in you get your bloods taken in the morning before anything and then have the drink and then you have to hang around for 2-3 hours and get bloods done again, but in England they have changed it to how I was told. I had my test done about a month ago now. I’ve no idea if it’s different in Scotland, Wales etc.

The drink isn't that bad, it tastes like orange flavoured Lucozade Sport. You have 10 minutes to drink it in so try and gulp as much as possible in that time. It's 300ml so slightly less than a can of coke.

Hi, I'm UK haha, near Bristol!

I have to go to the midwife, have a blood test, then they give me the drink, then I wait 2 hours in the waiting room and then get retested! I got some info at my last appt but It didn't say anything about what happens if you can't keep it down.

So I guess it's different I every area! Seems odd though, they should just do it one way!!

At least it isn't loads, but I just tried to drink orange squash this morning as a trial run and was so sick! Very frustrating! Hormones have a lot to answer for!

I suspect they'd make you have another go if you brought it back up quite quickly - but I'm assuming it would have to be on another day to 'reset' things. I bloody hated the GTT test. Who on earth can stomach downing that much lucozade?? Plus the whole fasting thing was a nightmare for me. Whatever happens post-lucozade, they'll have your fasting sugars, and they're often the ones they're most concerned about. Good luck though - I've had GD three times and it's a right bummer!
