Bringing baby home from hospital...

Hello,

Just after some advice really... I've read/been told that newborns shouldn't be in a car seat for longer than 30 mins but we live 45 mins drive away from the hospital (on a good day, can be an hour or more depending on the time of day/if traffic is bad) so my question is whether this will be safe for baby when they first come home or if we'll need to stop on the way and if so, how long would we need to take him/her out of the seat before putting them back in and continuing the journey?

Thanks for your help!

Out of the car seat for 15 to 20 mins. It’s not longer than 30 minutes because it effects their breathing.

We live 50 minutes away too so will stop half way if we need to. Didn’t with DS1 though and he was fine, the advice then was 2 hours rather than 30 minutes.

mrsk28 · 15/02/2019 08:33

I thought it was 2 hours? Due in April and will be around 45 min drive home from the hospital!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 15/02/2019 08:34

We did 45 mins straight home.

Any longer than an hour and is stop

Jackshouse · 15/02/2019 08:37

mrsk28 under 6 weeks it is 30 mins.

nervousmums · 15/02/2019 08:43

Yeah is definitely 30 minutes. Was 2 hours not so long ago and it's to do with their breathing.

I used a car seat in. Buggy with my son and he was fine . As long as got a properly neck rest

PotteringAlong · 15/02/2019 10:30

In reality though you will just drive straight home. In the real world no one is stopping for 15 mins every 30 mins you drive anywhere as you’d never get anywhere.

Cookit · 15/02/2019 10:30

Presumably you’ll be in the back with the baby sitting watching every breath and screaming “slow down!” every time the car goes a mile faster or was that just me? so I wouldn’t worry...

SinkyMalinks · 15/02/2019 11:52

Agree with cookit - just one of you sit in the back with baby ...

Took us nearly an hour to get DD home through heavy city centre traffic. Wasn't really anywhere for us to stop but DD was fine. She actually bawled the whole way home cause she didn't like the car at first, nothing wrong with her breathing or lungs

outpinked · 15/02/2019 13:24

Took us 40 mins to get home. No big deal. Had him in the car seat for about an hour when he was 2 weeks old. He’s fine. A lot of these new regulations baffle me and didn’t exist a decade ago when I had DC1.

TokenGinger · 15/02/2019 13:43

It's 30 minutes because the positioning from a car seat can restrict breathing. Sit in the back with baby and tilt its head back if you think breathing may be compromised.

EyeDrops · 15/02/2019 13:46

I think as long as one of you is sitting in the back with baby, you'll be fine without stopping. If traffic is bad and it's looking like taking over an hour, maybe stop somewhere for a coffee if you're able?
