Cost of a pram? I'm clueless

My mum is desperate to purchase the pram for our first child. I was happy to go second hand (not because we can't afford a new one, I'm just quite conservative with money tight arse) and see some practically new pristine ones for sale.
My darling mum wants to buy a new setup and she is very excited about going pram shopping this weekend with us. What is the average cost of a pram? She has very nice (and normally expensive) taste. I'm not as particular in terms of my taste, I'm not one for getting the branded fad, I just don't want something that is crap.
How much did you pay for yours? Was more expensive ones worth it? What's the most popular at the minute?

I got the Stokke xplory travel system 4 years ago and it was just over 1k I think. I loved it though and still sold it on for a pretty penny.

Youngandfree · 12/02/2019 21:36

First one was a mamas and papas sola and I think it was about 500-600 for everything excluding the car seat.
Then we got a bugaboo donkey duo after the second DC and that cost over 1300 I think 🙈

Mum and I went to John Lewis for a look/general baby shop day out as she wanted to put some money towards a big 'thing'. She liked the mega expensive ones (icandy etc) but I couldn't justify the cost at £800-£1000! I went for a Maxi-Cosi Adorra in the end as it ticked most of my boxes without being outrageous. The pushchair, base and car seat were £400. The car seat base I got for £40 secondhand from mum's neighbour and I also decided to get the bassinet for day maps rather than a Moses basket, that was £165. So £600 has got me a full set of stuff almost all new. However £400-£500 would have got me a second hand icandy/silver cross type of thing, some pristine ones nearby that only would have needed new mattresses and they aren't expensive. But as this is our first child and we hope to have second reasonably soon after I wanted new for the warranty as much as anything else.

Good luck pram shopping😣.
With dd2 I dint find out I was pregnant until I was nearly 5myths. 23 years after dd1 was born.
When we went pram shopping it nearly ended in divorce. The shop assistance wanted to know
Did we want
A travel system
3wheels
Swivel wheels
Forward facing.

All we wanted was a bloody pram, she was quite miffed we weren't enthusiastic.
3hrs later £950 we left with a venicci travel system.
I have it to my neice it was still in great condition.

Depends on your needs. Is weight a factor? What sort of roads? How important is storage? Etc. We tried a lot in John Lewis and went with bugaboo bee as it suits our “city living” - got it with a discount in Black Friday and I think it was £650/£700 withall the new born attachments. With John Lewis you also have a warrantee so can replace any parts that get damaged/worn

Good luck!

MondeoFan · 12/02/2019 21:58

Bought a bugaboo cameleon. Deciding factor was that I could change the hoods which I liked stopped me getting bored with the pram. Cost £950 I think and bought hoods later on.
Still use it now 4 years on although will sell soon. Great to push and can have forward facing or rear facing, great size basket and can have car seat on frame, bassinet or larger seat

We ended up with the cybex balios s + carrycot for £400. It's relatively light, one handed fold, big suspension wheels, the carrycot is roomy and comfy looking. Basically it ticked all the boxes and didn't make me almost vom at the price of it.
We are city dwellers with cobbled streets so something sturdy with a relatively small turning circle was a must.
Also looked at the maxi cosi adora that a pp mentioned.
And the oyster 3 looked a great system at a really good price. The only reason we didn't go with that one was the fact that the fold was slightly more involved then the cybex.

Lwmommy · 12/02/2019 22:06

We got a Hauck Travel system brand new from Amazon for £75, it did the job fine. Easy to put together and use, lasted till.DD was about 2.5 when we moved to a £30 cheap.umbrella fold because we didnt need a big pushchair any more.

Moominfan · 12/02/2019 22:09

Can't go wrong with a bugaboo.

annlee3817 · 12/02/2019 22:12

We bought a Graco travel system as it was on sale for £150, I was clueless about all this and just thought it was a good deal. I absolutely hated it, cheap, plastic, my DD looked uncomfortable in the car seat and it didn't have a carry cot. The lie flat part of the buggy seemed hugely unsuitable for a newborn. So at six weeks old we bought a second hand Quinny travel system with maxi Cosi car seat and carry cot. Much better, carry cot was great for daytime naps, but looking back it was quite cumbersome and I wouldn't choose it again.

We now have an out and about nipper buggy, which is perfect for us for going on off road walks, running etc. Wish I'd known about them at the time.

Point is, research your needs, try them out, look at them collapsed as well as up and see what fits best.

Creatureofthenight · 12/02/2019 22:17

Don’t do what I did which was get swayed by the lovely Cosatto pram designs and only realise after purchase that the damn thing barely fits in the car boot 🤦🏻‍♀️

FunkyChunk · 12/02/2019 22:17

I am also a tight arse 😂

With DD1 we had a Mamas and Papas travel system coming in at over 1k. It did last until she was much bigger but I still can't believe we spent so much and I wasn't super keen.

This time around, we've bought the Mothercare Journey Edit and absolutely love it... For £350

Stadt · 12/02/2019 22:17

We got a mamas and pappas zoom about 4 years ago. It was about £350 for the pram, carry cot, seat, car seat and adapters. I then spent £100 for isofix base for the car seat. Its seen us through 2 dcs so far and still going well! I got it from their outlet store so it was a bit cheaper.

ifoundthebread · 12/02/2019 22:18

With my daughter I had the attitude of 'its just a buggy, not fussed about this and that feature as long as it gets me from A to B' turns out if your using it day in day out all those little things make a big difference. I went through about 15 different pushchairs until I bought a mamas and papa's armadillo xt for £300 and loved it. This time round with my son I thought more about it - where would it be used, how easy is it to fold, how narrow do I need it to be, what does the basket fit in it, how long does the average child fit in the seat. Went with a cosatto giggle 2 pixalette design because hate boring and it did what I needed it too. Cost £400 for the whole travel system including car seat.

DerelictWreck · 12/02/2019 22:21

From what I've seen you tend to be in one of three camps:

  1. second hands and budget jobs - approx £100
  2. Mid-range highstreet or online models (othercare, cosatto, Maxii etc) approx £400
  3. High-end and brand names (i-candy, bugaboo etc) approx £1000.
Ribeebie · 12/02/2019 22:21

We have a mamas and papas sola2. Got it as a bundle, pram, carrycot, car seat, isofix etc. Cost £579 on sale but we waited and got it at a mamas and papas expectant parent event so got another 10% off. Mothercare also do this so worth having a shop round then seeing if any events in your area soon. Congratulations!

snoopy18 · 12/02/2019 22:25

We shopped around a few times before deciding what to buy. Didn’t realise just how much of a difference in quality there is out there 😳 Ended up with the Cosatto Giggle 2 travel system and car base just under £500 on a promo. We have put it together not used it yet as baby isn’t here just yet. Love the feel and quality so far so hopefully it’s a decent set up!

DrWhy · 12/02/2019 22:26

We have an out and about nipper that I love, carrycot attachment while they are small and adapters for the maxi cosi car seat. It’s light, manoeuvrable and great on tough terrain and got running. Only thing I don’t like is that once they are out of the carry cot the buggy doesn’t parent face. Buggy plus carry cot low-mid hundreds plus car seat separately.

Figmentofimagination · 12/02/2019 22:28

I bought 2 years ago the Joie chrome travel system bundle from Mothercare. Had the pushchair, carrycot and gemm car seat for just over £300. Also bought the base for the car seat separately. You can get the updated versions from Mothercare now. £350 for the travel system bundle and at least £90 for the base.

The carrycot was used for a lot of daytime naps until about 6months. As DS is small (9.5kg at 21 months), we are still using the pushchair, car seat and base today. It is really sturdy and apart from the usual wear and tear marks looks really good. We've definitely got our money's worth from it.

Heyha · 12/02/2019 22:52

I'm wondering if I should have got a less urban system as we do live rurally and have a smallholding but I'm hoping baby carrying will work for me in that context and the multipurpose system (front and rear facing, I liked that, it's also idiot-proof to use) will be for shopping and visiting I hope I'm not back at the shop in 12 months buying an off-roader...I did make a list if wants and not importants but it's all guesswork with your first child isn't it!

SenoraSurf · 13/02/2019 21:26

Thank you so much ladies- I've managed to built a list using all your helpful advice so I can go along with some sort of background knowledge! Going shopping on Friday so will let you know how it goes.
