weight gain 1st trimester - normal?

I'm 8 weeks into my first pregnancy and my scales are going up at a crazy rate. I've put about 6-7lbs on over the last 3 weeks. it seems to be only carbs (especially BBQ pop chips/chipsticks) that keep my nausea at bay.
Has anyone else seen much weight gain at this point?
The guides online say that I shouldn't notice much of an increase until the 2nd trimester, so i'm worried about what's to come!

I've spoke to my midwife who told me to basically to just carry on and I'm that I'm still at a healthy BMI, but didn't give me any constructive ways to stop this continuing to happen.
I do go to the gym about 3 times a week and have kept on doing this.
Does anyone have any healthy snack or meal ideas they are using/used that they can share?

Thanks :) x

I did the same sort of weight gain in the same timescale for the same reason! If it's any reassurance as soon as I stopped feeling sick all day every day at about 13 weeks (was very rarely actually sick, due to the carbs and cereal stopping it) my appetite went back to normal and I've gained very little weight more, just a few pounds which is almost certainly just baby, fluid, placenta, boobs etc as the bump has developed. I thought I'd just keep piling it on at the same rate til the end but it really was just down to needing to eat a lot of what I fancied to be able to keep functioning!

I think it's normal to gain some weight in the first trimester. Of course you'll put on weight, I couldn't fit into my jeans by 8 weeks.

Don't worry too much, the midwife would have said if there was a problem. Being a healthy BMI before pregnancy is a great position to start in.

Currently 29 weeks and avoiding the scales as much as possible Grin as long as baby is healthy that's all that matters.

Meant to say I basically just ate carbs in the first 14 weeks and then worried about healthier eating after that. Couldn't stomach my usual diet at the start.

Now I mostly snack on fruit, yogurt and nuts. And make sure to get as much veg into meals as possible and drink loads of water.

I'm not weighing myself - I really do not want to know!
Got enough things to worry about as it is before we get to 12 weeks - if you were a healthy weight before and are still exercising then really, don't worry and stop with the scales. Just eat what you fancy and when you get to trimester 2 revert back to better diet.

I am still in all my regular clothes at 9+1 but feel bloated and at the end of the day look forward to putting my PJ's on as things feel tight. But I don't think there is anything massively noticeable to others yet.

Yeah I wouldn’t bother trying to manage this too much until you’re passed the 12 week stage. Most people I know of are saying that they are suddenly craving carbs. I hate sandwiches and pasties yet suddenly I was hankering after both. At 11.5 weeks now and it’s easing down a lot. Try to switch in healthy if you can but don’t worry if you can’t. You’ll probably get a better handle on it in another 4 weeks.

Bring hungry was my number one cause of morning sickness btw so I really wouldn’t advise being hungry

Karigan195 · 11/02/2019 16:07

I know of that are newly pregnant of course lol.

Three pregnancies.. big weigh gain in first trimester with all of them! I felt so sick and eating was the only thing that helped.
I went on to lose it all each time. Don’t worry too much about weight gain. Just get through the pregnancy. It can always be fixed afterwards

Loulouleggings · 11/02/2019 16:29

Thankyou! I've been worried that as it's started like this it's just going to keep going! Hopefully it will settle down in the second trimester! :-)

Don’t worry if it doesn’t. Honestly, sometimes you just have to ge through pregnancy as best you can! If you’re planning on breastfeeding, it really does eat a million calories and help you get back in shape
