Swolen feet, should I be worried?

I woke up this morning and the foot monster had paid me a visit. These feet do not look or feel like mine, hardly any ankle and they are incredibly swolen until past my ankle with two huge creases highlighting the problem. It also hurts when I point my toes.

I'm 21 weeks pregnant, should I be worried?

Any ideas as to how I can cope with this?

Will I now have Kankles for the rest of the pregnancy?

I have been driving quite a lot and am under a lot of stress, could this play a part or is it a normal pregnancy thing that I've not picked up on in the books?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks - Joe

Sounds like water retention - you need to drink lots of water. plus relaxing will probably help - easier said than done, I know.

I had massive ankles when preg with dd 1 and they went down when I consciously drank more water. But yours sounds more severe - can you call NHSdirect or something?

i had this after my dd was born, i was told to keep them up as often as possible and do exercises i.e move feet in circle, and wiggle toes !!! have a word with g.p or midwife though to be on safe side. x

I was only at the midwife last Tuesday and BP and urine were fine, then again, a lot of stress since then, but not sure if stress has anything to do with it or not.

It's come on very rapidly, I just tried to bend down into our low level fridge and the ankles hurt too much, feel very stretched. I'll look up pre-eclampsia on the internet as I've heard of it but have no idea what the symptoms or problems are with it.

Any more advice would be fab.

Thanks a lot - Joe

I can't get to see a midwife until later in the week, do you think I should bother a doctor about this or just drink lots of water and get some rest?

Any advice would be useful as I'm really not sure whether I'm overreacting or being too blaze!

Thanks - Joe

sounds like water retention-put your feet up whilst lying down so they are higher than your head -on pillows or cushions for as long as possile- hth

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 22:44

arty joe do you feel fine otherwise?
if you are worried dont hesitate to see a doctor-its what they're there for!

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 22:47

ive read your post again and it does sound a bitsevere for water retention id see a doc just to check and for your own peace of mind also- hth

Artyjoe - should you get any headaches - especially if severe then you need to get yourself to hospital asap. Otherwise it would be sensible if you saw your doctor soon. It sounds a bit early for hte normal pregnancy related water retention so is worth getting checked out. Incidentally most of hte hospital labour wards will admit you for monitoring if you just turn up and tell them you are worried. They usually take great care to reassure you!

Good luck!

How are you this morning artyjoe?

artyjoe · 07/09/2004 12:09

Hi Beansprout

I thought my feet looked slightly better when I woke up but now they look just as bad as yesterday. I've been under a lot of emotional stress the last few days (family problems with sister, mum and estranged dad) and have also suffered with two headaches and have somehow managed to gain 9 pounds in the last two weeks...so just to be on the safe side have got an appointment with the midwife.

It's probably stress and dehydration and all the books say 'mild swelling' is to be expected at this time, but even though I am a wopping 17.9 stones now I've always had very dainty feet whereas I now look like they belong to Fred Flintstone! fingers crossed for today. thanks - Joe
