Moses baskets - help!!

Hey all

I am due my first baby in a few months and assumed I would get a side sleeper for the first six months. BUT I didn't realise beds had to be a certain height etc. We have a really tall super king fabric bed (not a divan but the sides do go to the floor).

Are there any side sleepers on the market that could work? Or will we have to have a moses basket? If so can I get some recommendations of what would be our second best option after a side sleeper.

Thank you in advance :)

I just used a Moses basket and put it on a big padded footstool so it was level with the bed.

I’m glad I didn’t get a side sleeper cot as I had a c section and never would have managed getting in and out of bed with one.
It was only a cheap supermarket Moses basket and ds slept in it for 7 months.

Thank you for your replies so far!

Do Moses baskets have to be level with the bed too? Or is it ok if these are slightly lower than the top of your mattress?

I understand why the next to me sleeper has to be the same height. But am also wondering the same for a Moses basket. I was going to put a crib at the foot of our bed (more space). I wonder if I'm wrong in doing that?

Asda moses baskets. Cheaper and bigger (thus longer-lasting) than ones from mamas and papas etc.

We got one in addition to the next to me.

I have a divan and a chicco next to mw it comes with straps to tethet it to the bed which ive put under the bwd and around the base.

ReaganSomerset · 10/02/2019 22:37

@wombatron not sure about cribs, but I think I remember reading the next to me instructions said not to put it at the foot of the bed.

Ive got the hyde crib from mothercare. Prefer it to a moses basket. Not as expensive as a side sleeper and doesnt need to be same height as bed as baby is enclosed in it.

Newyearnewunicorn · 10/02/2019 22:46

I had the top of the basket slightly higher than the mattress on the bed. The basket was either next to the bed or at first at the head of the bed and I reached through the bedstead.
You can put the Moses basket in the cot which works really well especially if you take a side off the cot.
I second getting the biggest Moses basket possible

We have a tutti bambini cozee crib and it can be adjusted to various heights. You just need to be able to loop the straps around the bed base. It's much sturdier than the next to me and very easily collapses completely flat into a bag to be used as a travel cot. It's also huge so will last beyond 6 months if need be.
Side cribs must be very slightly lower than the bed so that the babies head can not hang over the edge if they were to roll.
Ours was the best thing we bought, it's so easy for night feeds and DS loves it. I would have hated having to lift him up over the edge of a basket in the early days after deliver, especially if you have a C.
I even if you cant attach it you can just use as a normal crib but take the sides down to take out baby and put them up to sleep.
I think Moses are too small and narrow in comparison, DS (4 months) likes to move around now and he can't do it in the downstairs Moses so he just wakes up.

Thank you for all your replies.

We really want a side sleeper but our bed must be about 80cm tall with mattress (if not slightly more) and from what I've read this makes side sleepers impossible.

The mattress of the side sleeper only needs to be level with your bed if you intend to sleep with the side down. I had a snuzpod and although I did have it level we kept the side up while we slept and just unzipped the side to make it easier to get baby out for feeding. However as a PP said if you intend to sleep with the side down it is very important that it is level.

Apologies that this may be seen as slightly off-point, but I would strongly advise against buying any children's mattresses/moses baskets that are made in the UK since they will almost certainly contain a lot of flame retardant chemicals that are regularly shown to be extremely bad for a baby's health and development. Buy instead from outside the UK. Only the UK and Ireland has tough flammability laws that lead to the use of these chemicals.

You could always put a board on the floor underneath the cot to raise it up to the correct level. I have heard of people doing this successfully...

PerditaMacleod · 11/02/2019 13:57

We have a really high super king bed and we had a bednest for DC1, which did go high enough. You can't rent them anymore but I just got one for £30 for DC2 on eBay. You can still buy new mattresses and fabric bits from the bednest website.
