Local anesthetic at dentist at 12 weeks pregnant

Hi,
I'm about 12 and a half weeks pregnant and was given a local anesthetic at the dentist. I was assured that it was fine but after going home and reading up on it I'm terrified that I've harmed my baby. Has anyone had this done and has had a healthy baby or does anyone have any information on this?

It's fine x

Of course it's fine. How would it harm the baby?

There's a lot of ridiculous paranoia on the internet. Listen to reputable sources, like your dentist, doctor and midwife, and never Google stuff.

Thank you so much for you replies. I know you should never Google stuff and I went ahead and did it anyway. Has anyone had it done this early on and all was well with their child? I'm 12 and a half weeks pregnant from last period date making the baby about 10 weeks old.

Loads of people including me have had anaesthetics in pregnancy and it is fine.
A dental local anaesthetic is a tiny dose which is given directly to the area that needs treating and does not harm your baby. To make doubly sure the dentist in my experience won’t give you more than is absolutely necessary to get the job done.

You should try to stop worrying. You’re going to have 30 odd years of fretting about your baby so best not to sweat the small stuff.

I know what you're saying Polly99. I don't know why I've got myself in such a state about it but I can't seem to stop thinking about it. With my first little boy I didn't even take as much as a percetamol feel very guilty. How far on were you when you had the LA? Thank you for replying to me xxx

A local anaesthetic is literally only affecting your mouth. It's not going below your neck. Unless you're having a very unusual kind of pregnancy indeed (which you're not... Right? Your baby's in the usual place? Grin), your baby never even knew.

Thanks Countess. I'd read that it does cross the placenta which is why I got myself so worked up but maybe I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet. Xx

I didn’t know I was pregnant and at 8 weeks had full on sedation for a tooth extraction.

He’s fine !

outpinked · 11/02/2019 11:26

It’s fine, I had one when I was 24 weeks with DS. He is absolutely fine.

Thank you all so much for you replies. Can't tell you how much that has helped me to be more rational about it. so lovely to hear that you and you're babies are doing so well xxx

If you're feeling anxious or concerned about the local anesthetic used during your dental visit, it's important to discuss your worries with your healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and address any specific concerns you may have. If you have any further concerns or questions, reaching out to your healthcare provider is the best course of action for personalized advice and support. I can recommend timberfallspediatricdentistry.com/pediatric-dental-services/dental-anesthesia/. You can visit their site.

@deen01 this ladies baby will be coming up to 4 years old now, I doubt she’s still worrying about it.
