Did you get an early scan when pregnant after mc?

Hi all, so I'm currently around 6 weeks pregnant. Last October we unfortunately had a mmc ( discovered at 12 week scan) followed by erpc.

After finding out I was pregnant this time I called the early pregnancy unit who said they don't do early scans unless you have been through 3 mcs!

I keep going from calm, thinking I don't need the extra scans, whatever will happen will happen. To anxious and wanting a scan in a few weeks time when previous pregnancy stopped developing.

Anyone been in this situation? Did you get any extra scans? Any words of wisdom welcome x

You can always pay privately for an early scan. I was only offered early scans with an ivf pregnancies (though my two mc were chemical pregnancies so it would have made a difference...).

It would be hugely uncommon for them to offer an early scan 'purely' on the basis of a single mc as they are unfortunately so common...

@physicskate yes I suppose you are right. It's such an anxious time, maybe I just need to put it to the back of my mind and power through until the 12 week scan. Thanks for your response x

Yes but not because I had a miscarriage but because I had bleeding.

Echomama · 09/02/2019 20:24

Only had an early scan after two mcs but only because if heavy bleeding

Thesearmsofmine · 09/02/2019 20:27

Unfortunately early mc are so common that it would be impossible to give women an early scan after just one.

Skybooks · 09/02/2019 20:33

I had a MMC in Dec and when we conceive again I will be paying for a private scan, I think piece of mind over my mental health is worth it.

But yes I think they should be offered

Cookit · 09/02/2019 21:08

Yes, third pregnancy in the year and I did get an early one but I wasn’t expecting them to provide it and I would just have paid privately if not.

Gillian1980 · 09/02/2019 21:20

I went for a private one as I was so anxious following the previous mc.
I was still nervous as hell until the 12 week scan, then the 20 week scan .... etc

CrabbyPatty · 09/02/2019 21:37

We did have early scans on NHS (2 I think) after 1 previous miscarriage. Maybe we were lucky to get this but I don't think its unheard of as it alleviated anxiety so much. Our Midwife offered to arrange it. X

I paid for a scan at 8 weeks with my third pregnancy as my first ended in mmc and and second with early miscarriage. My MW said I wasn't eligible for an early NHS scan. It gave me massive reassurance to see a heartbeat and baby measuring the right size. She is currently 7 months old!
My advice if going for early private scan would be choose somewhere that is set up to do a transvaginal scan if needed.

Melamine · 09/02/2019 21:53

Had exactly the same experience as you with first pregnancy, I paid for an early scan this time as I would rather have known earlier if there was no heartbeat. All was well, and the relief was indescribable! Good luck OP!

didireallysaythat · 09/02/2019 21:56

Not here. You don't see a mid wife until 10-11 weeks - I was told it was because many pregnancies won't make it that far and there's nothing seeing a midwife earlier would help with anyway.

PCohle · 09/02/2019 22:01

Good luck OP Thanks

As others have said unfortunately early MCs are so common that the NHS doesn't often offer early scans just for reassurance. You can pay for one privately if you would find it comforting.

sometimessometimes · 09/02/2019 22:20

Early mc's are so common. Pay for a private scan if you're so anxious And good luck.

I speak from experience!

elliejjtiny · 09/02/2019 22:27

No. With ds1 I asked and the midwife said not unless I'd had at least 3 miscarriages. By the time I was pregnant with ds4 I'd had 3 miscarriages so I asked again but I was told it was just for women who'd had 3 miscarriages in a row. I'd had 3 dc in between my miscarriages so I didn't qualify.

MaryBoBary · 09/02/2019 23:34

I wasn’t entitled to one as it was a minimum of 3 miscarriages rule like you say. But we paid privately and a medical issue showed up so the clinic we went to rung the hospital and the hospital did an early scan anyway based on what the clinic had seen.

Graphista · 10/02/2019 01:00

Not with 2nd mc as pp say so many 1st pregnancies end in mc it's almost normal (doesn't make it any less heartbreaking of course). But the thing to take from that is that having had 1 mc doesn't necessarily mean you'll have another.

But with pregnancy 3 (dd) I did, BUT it was because I was "high risk" for a number of reasons inc pregnancy 2 was partly ectopic.

Unfortunately there's rarely anything can be done to prevent if they spot a problem anyway, it's mainly reassurance if things at that point going ok.

Good luck with it all.

missrose0110 · 10/02/2019 10:10

Wow that's for all of the responses, it is so sad to hear how common mc and mmc are. I will consider a private scan, otherwise wait until 12 weeks. I've been anxious the same thing will happen again, but hearing from everyone on here it sounds like lots of women go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies. Fingers crossed everything will be okay, now just to try and relax. Thanks all x

I did, but then sadly miscarried again after everything looking fine at that early scan. So for subsequent pregnancy when I'd had 3 miscarriages and qualified for one at the EPU, I turned it down because I knew it would terrify me without providing much reassurance. (And all was fine that time so it worked out anyway.)

I would say, go for the early scan privately if you think it would help you. Recurrent miscarriages are much rarer than one-off miscarriages so there's no particular reason to think what happened with mine would happen to you. It's about what you think would make you feel better - you know yourself best.

Graphista · 10/02/2019 17:00

"but hearing from everyone on here it sounds like lots of women go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies." Yep!

I know people who've had 5+ mc go on to have healthy babies (plural).

I have endo that was discovered as a result of the 2nd mc, had to have 2 further surgeries & medical treatment, then was closely monitored. Dds pregnancy & birth weren't straightforward but she's here now!

Good luck Thanks
