Hi,
Sorry for the gross picture but i gave birth five days ago and had heavy bleeding during/since. However today when visiting the toilet i passed this HUGE blood clot (i actually felt it coming out) now should i be worried or is this normal? As it seems extreme.

Thanks

I’ve just noticed that i’ve posted this in pregnancy instead of birth by accident but still hoping that you can help, sorry!

Have you been lying down?

WarIsPeace · 06/02/2019 22:45

If you are having lots like that I'd speak to the ward tonight. If it's a one off and you are well I'd keep an eye on it and speak to the mw tomorrow

Sometimes it just pools and clots if you've been still for a bit, doesn't always mean that the bleeding is excessive

Isadora2007 · 06/02/2019 22:47

We were always told if we passed anything larger than a 50p piece to keep it to show the MW. When I did that she didn’t seem impressed. She told me that large clots were fine as long as they dispersed easily- could be pulled apart and were just made of blood.
I passed a clot roughly the size of my palm- it was like a small liver. I was told that was normal- but weeks later I passed gritty bits that were retained placenta so i was lucky I didn’t get a nasty infection.
So I guess I am not being very helpful am I? As a once off I’d check it was just blood and mention to MW. But if it happens again I’d ask to be checked over. Or if you feel unwell etc.

This just looks like my normal period tbh. I didn't realise it wasn't normal to pass clots.
If you're worried you could mention it to MW.

I'd call 111 (or even better the ward if they're still available) now for advice on how to proceed! I think the doctors usually want to see you if the clots you pass are bigger than a 50p coin and this clot looks bigger than that. Another guideline they have is to call them if you have to change your pad more than two times per hour. All the best!

@emandems30 no but i’d been sat still a while with my legs crossed.

@WarlsPeace we’re visiting the midwife tomorrow so yes i’ll check, thank you.

@Isadora2007 yes i’d say it was about the size and density of a golf ball, it was disgusting and freaked me out a lot. I’ll definitely mention it this time.

@candless you pass clots the size of golf balls?? I sympathise for you. Clots are normal but i’ve never seen ones that size.

Yes regularly and a lot of blood but I think my periods may not be normal but not sure.
I think you should contact someone just to be safe if this is not normal for you. Hope everything turns out ok for you Thanks

Mention it to Midwife but don’t worry. I had two enormous ones the day after I gave birth. I was in the shower and I honestly thought I was giving birth again. I’ve never been so terrified. It was fine though, just absolutely disgusting. Mine were much bigger than that as well
