Received an appointment with an obstetrician

Hi all

I’m 16 weeks’ pregnant and I’ve received a letter telling me I have an appointment to see an obstetrician at my local hospital. But I’m really confused - as far as I know I’m considered low risk and I’m under midwife-led care. My 12 week scan and bloods went well (as far as I know!) and I haven’t had any other significant problems.

I wasn’t expecting an appointment with an obstetrician - noone’s said they’re referring me.

Has this happened to anyone else? I’m terrified there might be something wrong I don’t know about. Or perhaps it’s a mistake?

What’s your BMI like?

ChesterCake · 06/02/2019 20:07

I had consult led in one pregnancy for BMI, and due to recurrent early miscarriages in another

DannyWallace · 06/02/2019 20:07

There's a few reasons it could be
Is this your first pregnancy?
Do you have a high or low BMI?
Any family history of illnesses even if you don't have them yourself?

If you're not 100% maybe just give your midwife a call x

TheBluesAreStillBlue · 06/02/2019 20:09

I was consultant- led due to previous c section issue and wanting a vbac, is this your first pregnancy?

Bythebeach · 06/02/2019 20:12

Loads of potential reasons, lots non-worrying - ring your booking midwife and ask.

Buddytheelf85 · 06/02/2019 20:43

Thank you all for your replies. I don’t think any of the reasons suggested apply. My BMI was about 22 at booking in, I’m 32, I’m not aware of any illness in the family, it’s my first baby, no history of miscarriages. But I’ll ask my booking midwife. Hopefully it’s nothing to worry about Smile

Could it be ‘or a member of their team’ and be a hospital midwife/ scan or something?

DannyWallace · 06/02/2019 23:20

Hmm, yeah I wonder the same as PP. maybe it's just another appointment that looks like a consultant letter.
I would just question with your midwife Smile (oh, and sorry I didn't say before, congratulations!!!)

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 07/02/2019 00:33

I had the same kind of letter with my last pregnancy.

Turned out the consultant named on the letter was the chap that oversaw the care for the women who were using the midwife clinic. I never actually saw him, but his name was on my file etc. All appointments were with the midwives.

Hi all - just to let you know I asked my midwife and I got an answer! As @bythebeach said, she told me there can be tons of reasons for a consultant appointment, most non-worrying. In my case the reason is my history of anxiety problems - apparently in my area it’s routine for women to be given a consultant appointment around 18-22 weeks if they’ve had mental health issues in the past. It doesn’t mean I’m high risk or now consultant-led or anything, it’s just a routine thing.

So I made a big fuss over nothing, but thank you anyway for your replies! Smile
