Fallen whilst pregnant - Anyone else?

Fallen down some steps v. quickly, and landed on my back (don't know how!!) am 20 weeks and midwife said as long as I can feel baby move and no bleeding - yes I can feel the baby and no blood - all is ok. Why did she ask, though if I was Rhesus Positive or Negative?. And could I have injured the baby? I'm worried now. Have scan next week. Will it be ok do you think?

Hi memum,
Hope you are ok. I'm sure you will be fine - a couple of people on the October thread had nasty falls but everything is ok. Dbs are very, very well protected in there, nature designs us that way. I don't know of anyone who has fallen over and injured the baby. I'm sure your midwife would have you in there asap if she thought there was any sort of problem. Bit of chocolate and tlc might be needed for you though!!

If you are Rhesus negative and you do go on to have a bleed then you would need an injection of anti-D. Baby is unlikely to have been injured as he/she should be protected by the amniotic fluid. Hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will come on here and be able to reassure you (there is a m/w on here who posts as mears). Hope you are OK.

It sounds like your mw checked you over fairly thoroughly and her advice seems sound. I suspect you're still pretty shaky, but babies are very well padded and protected inside their Mum, so changes are all he/she felt was a little jolt and your blood pressure rise for a second or two.

The fact that you landed on your back has prob helped minimise any ( already fairly unlikely) damage to your baby anyway, but you must be careful when lifting etc if you have injured yourself.

I was standing painting on a swivel office type chair in DD's nursery at around 32 weeks preg, and the thing swivelled and I fell hard on my side onto te carpeted floor. I was ok, apart from being shaken and a bit bruised, but like you was massively concerned about the baby. She continued to move as normal and she sits next to me as I type as healthy, happy 2 year old !

I fell forwards when I was about 7 months pregnant with my first. I put my hands out to break my fall, so they were all scraped up, luckily not broken. But my abdomen did take some of the fall. My doctor said the exact same thing as yours. I was very conscious of feeling the baby move for the next 2 hours but everything was OK. You'll be fine!

I fell and landed stomach first onto an wall. I must have been about 10 weeks but i didn't know. after I found out i was pg i panicked. I now have a very healthy 4yr old ds.
Its good to get these things checked out but as everyone else says, nature has its way of protecting them

Fell flat on bump while elegantly crossing road at 38 weeks. No harm seemingly done to ds, now 5. Sorry to hear of your tumble and hope all is well (I am sure it will be, nature is pretty good at protecting the unborn child and leaving its packaging black, blue, covered in scrapes and highly embarassed).

When i was pregnant with DS1 my doctor told me that i could fall down a whole flight of stairs and that only i would be hurt .... babies are very well protected ... my doctor also reminded me that the babies are safer in you than out!

suzywong · 06/09/2004 14:50

Sorry to hear about your shock, I thing she asked about Rhesus pos or neg just to be on the safe side, if you are neg and your baby's blood mixes with yours there could be complications ( I think, I am R neg and it's really not a big deal these days)

I'm certain, as the other wise MNers say, you have done no damage to baby.

To answer your original question, I was on holiday in a rented villa when I was 27 wks PG with DS2 and I was holding hefty 2yr old DS1 in my arms when I went to sit down on what I though was an upholstered arm of a sofa. It was actually made of very very hard wood and I clipped my cocyx (tail bone). Bloody Nora it hurt. I went to the local hospital and had a scan in the maternity unit. No damage whatsoever but we did get the sex of DS2 revealed which ended the question of what were we going to have. ( (I knew it was a boy because I had the same cravings for Love Heart sweeties as I did with ds1)

Sorry to ramble but the sun is WAY over the yard arm down here in Oz and the merlot is cheap

HTH

I fell over in the car park at work when I was 34 weeks pregnant with dd. I dislocated my sacro-ileac (sp?) joint (hip from back) which, whilst painful wasn't excrutiating - it hurt much more when i did it again a few years later. Went to the maternity hospital just to be checked over they said baby was fine. Then fell over again whilst in hospital ante-natally at 38 weeks - once again baby was fine.

Does anyone remember "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down"? 'cos it was sung a lot to me at the time.

cerys · 06/09/2004 15:05

Memum - fell out of the back door over a Barbie spacehopper when about 28 weeks pg this summer. Also fell when 37 weeks pg with DD2 and twisted ankle, but both times baby was/is fine - it was just me who was shaken up. Midwife asked me about the Rhesus +/- too but I didn't ask why at the time.
Hope you're feeling better now - I'm sure once you have the scan you'll be reassured

eidsvold · 07/09/2004 00:24

twice - once about 20 odds week pregnant - got foot caught and went down sideways.... then last week had a wobbly old chair collapse under me(31 weeks) as I was standing on it... luckily landed on my very padded butt... just missind dd who was playing on the floor near where I had stood on the chair.

Like you was told as long as there is no bleeding and you can feel the babe - boy the babe let me know they did not appreciate being tossed around......

kbaby · 07/09/2004 17:50

I fell over at 38 weeks pregnant while clearing our garage. I slipped and landed onto the corner of a chest of drawers on my belly. I was admitted to hospital overnight for monitoring but everything was fine and baby went full term.
