Im suffering so bad with migrain and nausea today, therefore struggling with my appetite. So worried I’m not getting enough nutrients for my baby’s development. I’m 8weeks I have a scan tomorrow. I was on 80mg propanolo slow reales capsules before getting pregnant to prevent migraines, but had to stop taking them as they are not safe during pregnancy. I went to my GP who’s prescribed me some anti-sickness along with sumatriptan for migraine. I’m a little nervous to take the sumatriptan as previously suffered 2 miscarriages. Has anyone else took sumatriptan during their first trimester. Or any tips on relieving migraines?

I took sumatriptan 4 days before finding out I was pregnant. But i'm only 5 weeks now so no idea if its had any effect. The leaflet didn't say 'do not use when pregnant' (I went and re-read after the positive test result) it says check with your doctor so i'm hoping its not a big no-no. I have had 3 migraines in the last week. No tips for relieving migraines, sorry i'm not much help!

@cherry2510 I am experiencing the same with the migraines, about 7 weeks preg. For me I have to avoid being on my laptop too long (I'm at uni) and not have bright lamps near by. I turn the brightness down on all screens including tv and phones. Best thing for me is darkness and loads and loads of fluids !! hope it improves for you OP xx

Hi! I am a migraine sufferer and currently take 80mg propranolol for migraine prevention. I am 29 weeks pregnant. Propranolol causes growth restriction in 3rd trimester but nothing much in the first two... I have it in writing from my neurologist that sumatriptan is ok to take as relief medication. My pregnancy is going swimmingly - I had my first growth scan last week and baby is on 60th centile growing beautifully.
I know it can be very hard making the decision to take the meds or not for fear of hurting baby but migraine is a disability and the benefit outweighs the risk. I have other children and without my meds I have severe aura, pain and several debilitating neurological symptoms approx 20 odd days out the month. I could not function. Don’t suffer if you can’t manage... go back on your pills! X

God - I remember those pregnancy migraines- the worst. I used some stuff from Boots that you put directly on your forehead and it took some of the pain away. I am sure you have thought about this but I found avoiding my triggers had the most impact. Good luck.

Im a medical secretary so I work on a computer for thre majority of the day. I have turn the brightness down on my screen and have literally been working in the dark. Today I had to call in sick due the pain. I literally couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. @untiltheveryend I asked my consultant if I could continue taking my propanolo he told me no as it can affect the blood flow to the baby. Maybe this is due to the first trimester being the most risky. My pregnancy is clsssed as high risk due to previous miscarriages and gyne issues. @redcliff I bought some gel cool packs from boots today. Stuck one on my head it helped relive it a little. I took the anti-sickness from the doctor and have been drinking plenty of fluids. Still not moved from my bed. So scared of taking the sumatriptan even though my GP has told me it’s perfectly safe. I think it’s just fear with me due to my history. I think I’ll have to bite the bullet and take it soon. I really hope I don’t get these headaches / migraines throughout xx

Have you tried sumitriptan before and know it works? For me it actually made it worse, I've found that with other medication too. Never found one that works. Lucky mine aren't too severe and normally go if I can rest (which being a mummy of 2 and working part time is difficult). Hope it eases soon for you OP

Mrsmummy of Teo. I have used it before but the nasal spray version. That helped a lot. So I assume tablet form would be the same for me xx

I suffered with migraines during the first and into the second trimesters. Have suffered from them all my life but when I got pregnant they got a lot more frequent.

Didn't have any migraines in third trimester-they just stopped. My DC is 3 months old now and I still haven't had a migraine! (This is unusually long time for me not to have them).

You might just have to take days off work when you have them, that's what I did and my work luckily were understanding.

My midwife said it's very common for migraines to increase during pregnancy due to hormones.

I suffered this in my first pregnancy, couldn't get rid of them no matter what I tried and I was so unhappy because I just couldn't think straight. One day I was talking to an acupuncturist who said she could help, in ths days following the first appt I felt some relief, continued weekly appointments and headaches completely went. Just putting the option out there because I know how debilitating the headaches can be and that I wish I had discovered this sooner
