Buying nursing clothes

Has anybody bought nursing tops etc yet? I'm 7 months and trying to get sorted now before I get too big and lazy!

Is it easier just to get a couple of nighties/pj's and tops now and see how I feel?

Thanks!

I'm 31 weeks and have small selection of nursing clothes now which I'm hoping will see me through the summer. X3 PJs, x2 dresses, x5 t-shirts and a jumper. Got most in the sales, also some 2nd hand from eBay.

H&M nursing vests are fantastic. Cheap, last forever.

ParadiseLaundry · 03/02/2019 12:11

A lot of people will comment to say it's easier to just wear a vest top under a normal top or jumper and they're right, but when I started BF I liked proper nursing tops as I felt more comfortable in them. The problem is most nursing clothes are awful 🙈! I did get one or two nice vest tops on amazon, I'll see if I can find them.

Olivebrach · 03/02/2019 12:11

H&M have a good selection. i bought a few packs of the nursing vest tops and wore underneath normal tshirts/long sleved, and then just pulled that one up and unclipped vest top. I found it made it quite discreet when out and about

Thanks @spottedtiger - have you just bought them in your normal dress size? Think am being put off by currently not wanting anything to touch my bump so am only interested in maxis and dungarees!

A lot of nursing clothes are also maternity, so you can get them and wear them now

whatswithtodaytoday · 03/02/2019 12:15

I'm 35 weeks and have bought a couple of nighties and a pair of pjs I can nurse in (as I figure that's that I'll want to wear at first), one top off eBay, and have thought about my existing wardrobe - I have at least three dresses that would work.

I'll order some H&M vest tops soon, but nothing else until I know breastfeeding is working out.

Megasaur5keeper · 03/02/2019 12:19

Pjs- just used what I had- all you needto be able to do is hoick them up. I had a couple of nighties (Mothercare) that opened up at the top a bit more at the start when I wanted to wear pants to accommodate maternity pads.
For day wear you could get a couple of nursing tops in (remember seasons though- I bought sleeveless/short sleeved because I was due in summer, forgetting that in Scotland summer lasts 5 mins.)
What works quite well is a strappy vest under a looser top - top top goes up, vest goes down under bra, exposing breast for baby but conveniently covering tummy. Plently of your existing clothes can probably be adapted tbh using a strappy vest under!

If you're on Facebook, ask to join 'can I breastfeed in it uk' for loads of lovely ideas. There's a selling page allied too.

I got some of those shirt type nighties which were great for breastfeeding and also much easier after a c section as there’s no waistband and I could undo them to take them off rather than stretch above my head.
I mostly wore shirt type tops and pulled up my other tops to feed with a strap top under as PP has described

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 03/02/2019 12:24

Great, h & M seems like a top tip and there's one nearby. Will get a couple of vest tops and some nursing tops and see how I go - and yes, will definitely bear in mind the seasonal thing!

I loved the Jojo maman tops. They’re pricey but normally can be picked up on eBay if you’re not fussed about second hand (that’s where I got all of mine!)

SpottedTiger · 03/02/2019 13:02

I've gone for pre pregnancy size though most are also maternity wear and stretchy/loose, I'm wearing some already, but then I like wearing fitted stuff that shows off my bump.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 03/02/2019 20:36

I've just worn normal stuff. I wear high waisted jeans or skirts with normal tops so can just pull them up. Shirts, shirt dresses, dungarees, pinafore dresses are also good. Normal pjs with nursing bra or crop top under at first. The can I breastfeed in it Facebook group has loads of suggestions and they also have a selling page.
The problem with buying stuff while you're still pregnant is that you don't know what your shape will be like after as you could lose weight fast and be left with stuff that's too baggy. And a lot of the nursing stuff in the shops is maternity fit which I found quite unflattering postpartum.

Check out Bshirts, they are fabulous! I love that they do nice long sleeved versions which are made of cotton and wash really well. Lovely colours too. Also very discreet so ideal for breastfeeding in public. I bought all the long sleeved colours in December, lifesaver for the cold weather.

If you’re looking for advice then I’d suggest joining the Facebook Group called ‘Can I breastfeed it in? UK’. Lovely positive group with lots of tips and clothing suggestions, both ‘proper’ nursing wear and ‘normal’ clothes that work too. There is also a related selling page which is great for getting some bargains. Also check out the FB page called ‘Preloved Maternity and Nursing Clothes - UK’.

I wouldn't go mad incase Bf doesn't work out.

Also you'll get fed up of being ristricted to frumpy nursing clothes quite quickly. Vest and lose fitting top works fine. I also like dungarees, just pop boob out the side.

Other than the bras, which I hate I don't use any Bf clothes.
