Bedside crib after c-section: worth the money?

So, I'm starting to do some online window-shopping and am taken with the idea of a bedside crib like the Snuzpod. I don't want to use it as a real co-sleeper, but just zip down the side for feeds etc. as I'm likely to have a c-section and want to avoid lifting the baby every time.

But they're so expensive, given that my main reason for needing it would only apply for the first few weeks of recovery. (Even though it would be lovely afterwards as well, I probably wouldn't spend the money if I was sure I'd be able to get up and lift the baby from a normal cot). So I'm wondering if I'm overthinking it as my husband will be right there all the time to hand me the baby. He can work at home so does not need to get up early, and is quite prepared (as much as one can ever be) for sleepless nights. I'm sure it will be annoying at times but he's fully on board, and has already volunteered to take sole responsibility for all nappy changing! Shock

Should I just go for a regular cot placed next to the bed, or a moses basket on a stand (which I'd buy anyway for downstairs)? Or is the Snuzpod definitely worth the extra money?

I had a much cheaper bedside crib, but it was definitely worth it.

Following.

I had an EMCS and I could not use the bedside crib we had because getting in and out of bed was extremely difficult so the cot had to be moved but I did use it later. This time I will cosleep as soon as I am mobile.

I just used a Moses basket with stand which someone gave me second hand.

We loved ours.

BUT put it on DHs side for the first two weeks as getting out of bed is tricky and you need the space on your side.

We had a bednest. I had an emcs. It was a bit tricky for a few days but she stayed in it for 5 months.

Hmm, hadn't considered getting out of bed! Smile Good point.

@SweepTheHalls which one did you have?

Not CS but still found it invaluable, had a next to me and couldn't recommend it more, can also be easily folded down as travel cot

I think if you want a bedside crib that’s fine but I wouldn’t get one just because of a section. We had a Moses basket and that was fine; it was the same height as the bed and worked fine

Haggisfish · 02/02/2019 17:19

invaluable ime.

A lot of people swear by them. Suppose it depends on the size of your baby and how quickly they grow because they’re pretty expensive and not much bigger than a Moses basket. Many people just lower a normal cot to bed height and do it that way. Personally co-sleep using the sleepyhead which helped me enormously post c-section.

I’ve had three sections and never used one. I’m sure they are lovely and convenient but I never felt as though I was missing out or it was worth getting one.

Hipdtercat, The troll one. I would look second hand and just buy a new mattress if you can.

tenbob · 03/02/2019 08:10

We had a snuzpod and it was hands down the best thing we bought for the baby

Like PP said,
We bough the crib second hand and got a new mattress
DS was in it til about 5 months and it made night feeds so so easy during that time

Specifically for post c-section, tie a strap or dressing gown belt to the headboard or foot to the bed, so you can pull yourself up in bed rather than using your stomach muscles

We bought a bedside crib as it’s easier to fit in our room than the big main one and good for night feeds. But....I had a c section and except from the first 3 days (was in hospital anyway) I’d have no trouble lifting baby out of a normal cot... I know some people do struggle but everyone recovers differently.

We had a snuzpod and I’m really glad we got one. I didn’t have a CS so didn’t have that issue but I found it great for night feeds as I was BF so it meant I didn’t have to get out of bed. We didn’t use it as a cosleeper and kept the side up but did unzip the side for easily sliding baby over. DD was in it til she was almost 6 months when we moved her into her cot in her own room.
