36 weeks and painful bump at night - help!

I've tried everything I can think of - extra duvets, extra pillows, sleeping on an air bed, the list goes on - but I can't sleep!

For the past few nights I've been waking up with a horrible pain in my bump, on the left hand side near my hip. It's sore to touch, and my whole bump feels like it's full of concrete. Moving is awkward and uncomfortable, and I often wake up my poor husband with my pathetic yelping If the baby moves, it makes it worse - I feel like my skin's going to split.

I'm sure it's just a normal pregnancy ache/pain thing, but can anyone suggest any ways to relieve it? I've been so frustrated that I've ended up in front of BBC News 24 in tears for the past two nights!

As a side note, I don't get this in the day, if I have a nap etc - only in the night...

hi lily, im 36 weeks too and having major pain on my pelvis, i can sympathise with you. there were nights that i was dreading to go to bed, just in antecipation of how unconfortable i would be. but the situation has improved, thanks to my physiotherapist. i was referred to her few weeks ago and she spotted what was my problem.

using extra pillows its very helpful, i use several and a widgey one too. but if you dont know where the problem is exactly, you wont know how to position the pillows.

it might be worth for you to see a physio too? mine has even massaged my pelvic area, it was really good.

Oooh, pelvic massage sounds good! I saw a physio a few weeks ago for back pain, so think I am able to self-refer - I shall give the clinic a ring and see if I can get an appointment. I didn't think of physio at all - thank you!

Sorry you can't sleep, sadly this is what we all went through as its your body's way of preparing you for the sleepless nights ahead. Get a wedge pillow for your bump and try and sleep on your right hand side. I slept sitting up with one of those breastfeeding pillows (a v shape one that fits around you) and just nap when you can. If you can sleep during the day do this and get used to taking lots of little rests. If you massage olive oil or baby oil into your skin it might give you some relief. All the best and try not to be too anxious.

Lily- I could have written that! Its really annoying, as soon as nighttime comes my lower abdomen hurts and no matter what side I lay on it feels like my bump is dragging down and sooooo painful. I've tried loads of pillows etc but nothing really works. For some reason I don't have the pain in the day so for the last couple of nights I've been up all night and go to bed in the morning!! Really should try and sort my timings out but at the moment I'd rather sleep painfree!
Hope you sort something out soon.

PS, that's just it - it feels like my belly is dragging itself off to one side. Putting a pillow under the bump just makes it feel like I'm squashing it, and the baby has taken to kicking really hard around my ribs - it makes the mattress shake!

Roll on 40 weeks !

At least with this condition you know there will be a full and permanent cure within a few weeks

Saffy - I thought it was your left side you were meant to sleep on? That's what all my books say??
