Urine infection antibiotics. Cefalexin

Hi all,

Anyone having to take antibiotics for a potential urine infection?

I am 35 weeks and in the last 2 urine tests in the GP (I had some antenatal appointments with them), they have found some leucocytes, which could mean urine infection.

There are no symptoms and the levels or leucocytes are very low, but being the second test they asked me to take the antibiotics.

They prescribed me Cefalexin. I have asked and it seems to be safe. I will ask the midwife as well but if anyone has any experience with this I would love to hear it to get some reassurance.

Many thanks!
Xiana

Hi,

I've had a lot of UTIs in pregnancy, always taken the antibiotics prescribed, even when I haven't had symptoms as UTIs can potentially be dangerous for baby if left untreated.

I would take them if you've been told they are safe, if you have any side effects you can stop and ring GP/midwife again but they're pretty careful with what they prescribe to pregnant ladies!

Good luck z

Untreated uti can cause premature labour which it why they check for them.

I've been on it 5 times this pregnancy. I'm nearly at my due date. Untreated utis are more dangerous.

I was prescribed the exact same antibiotic today for the same thing. Take it. I'm also 35 weeks and have been pushing them to get antibiotics because I (and you) REALLY don't want to still have the infection when baby is born!!!

Pregnant women are more prone to infections like water infections etc apparently, it’s just one of those things I’ve had a UTI that spread up to my kidneys I only knew because I had really bad kidney pain I thought I was having contractions as I’ll be having my first child and I had no clue what to expect and my symptoms I just put down to pregnancy, turns out I had a UTI that spread into my kidneys I got prescribed them anti biotics once the course was over went for a check up and it was all clear, don’t worry and it won’t harm your baby as that’s what I was alarmed about x

36 weeks and got a uti too but I was put on trimethoprim. Didn't work and midwife wanted me to go onto stronger ones straight away due to the risk factor of prem labour. Mine had alot of blood protein etc in it. Doctors have been awful won't prescribe me anything till the sample comes back from lab next mon or Tues. Literally getting no where with anyone. Midwife is saying one thing but can't prescribe antibiotics and doctors just like ah you ll live another week. I can't walk or drive now literally been sat on sofa all week so definitely take them as it could be so much worse x

@Htaylor182 - my midwife has been like your doctors!! She's not bothered, despite the fact they've refused two of my samples since Tuesday, so they aren't even at the stage to culture it! Had to drive my third sample to the hospital myself today otherwise I would have had to give a fourth sample Monday!!!

Saw the gp today who said, naw, let's get you started on something and adjust if necessary.

Massive thanks all! This is very reassuring, I actually started this afternoon with the antibiotics. Better not to risk it! Thanks again and good luck with the remaining weeks!😊

@Htaylor182 I am sorry! That's sounds painful. It is quite frustrating that doctors won't listen to the midwifes. Hope you get it sorted soon! Best of lucks!
