Possible Gestational Diabetes?

I’m due to be induced this coming Monday and I have been feeling increasingly lousy that I am worried about having any reserves left to be able to labour effectively next week.

I have been to the hospital this week as I was feeling reduced movements. At the hospital, I also mentioned how lousy I had recently been feeling and told them a few of my symptoms: that I have started to swell up as I can no longer fit into any of my shoes except flip flops, how I had recently had blurred vision for about 10 minutes and had been increasingly thirsty. I also mentioned that I had been sleeping on and off for 12-14 hours per day and had been urinating very frequently (when awake). I also mentioned that I had an ‘accident’ in the middle of the night and queried if I had a urnine infection of some sorts.

The fetal heart monitoring went well but the two urine samples I provided had ketones and protein traces in them and so I had blood taken for further investigation to look into pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes and was sent home booked for another appointment the next day. All previous untie samples and blood pressure testing has been fine. The consultant didn’t seem worried as my blood pressure was still good although higher than my norm and said much of my symptoms were down to being in the last week of pregnancy. She also stated that my swelling wasn’t bad and was to be expected at this stage in my pregnancy.

The next day I was put on the heart monitor again at the hospital and all was fine. The consultant conducted a quick scan and all looked well e.g amniotic fluid etc. Additionally, my blood pressure had went down but was still slightly higher than my ‘norm’. I queried the blood test and was told it had very small traces of protein but nothing too concerning and as I was to be shortly induced anyway I didn’t need any further tests or treatment.

However, since coming back from the hospital I still feel like I am just ‘out of sorts’. I don’t have an appetite and eating anything sets off severe heartburn and I feel eating sets my body ‘off’ that I need to lie down for about two hours until I start to feel semi normal again. So much so - I am reluctant to eat anything and I am dreading having my dinner shortly. I am also still very thirsty but have noticed today that I have barely urinated and have otherwise been constipated for the past two weeks.

Lastly, i feel boiling hot but don’t have a temperature and standing for longer than 15 mins makes me feel light headed.

I know a lot of the above is normal but I am getting myself into quite a state about how pathetic I am being and I’m worried about my impending labour which will be quite difficult by all accounts.

Would appreciate opinions if this is normal or if you think it might be something more sinister like gestational diabetes despite my consultant not being overly concerned.

Does anyone think it will be worthwhile asking for a second opinion at the hospital tomorrow before I am induced? Judging by previous experience with my midwife and GP - I will just be dismissed by them if I call them tomorrow and will be told to call the triage team with my concerns.

Hi mum, I had gestational diabetes (managed without medication, diet alone), and what you are experiencing doesn’t sound familiar. That obviously doesn’t mean you definitely don’t have it of course but thought I would share my experience.

i had GD with all mine, did not have any symptoms at all, i did drink a lot but then i always have, only found out each time at 7 months with the 2 Ds and 5 months with DD due to high glucose in urine, ketones in urine is usually a sign of not taking in enough food or long gaps between eating or a sign of dehydration, protein in urine could be just a case of your kidneys working harder because you are pg or you have an infection or virus, try eating little and often, i could not handle any form of cooked meals in the last few weeks of being pg, if you are still concerns then speak with your midwife, hope all goes well xx
