Had both - and used both.

Moses basket - from birth and very handy as it could be bought downstairs for naps etc during the day.

DS outgrew it before we were ready to put him in his nursery (at about 3 months-ish) so ended up buying a crib aswell which we used for the final 3 months before he went into his own room.

Used both and would recommend both

Don't bother with a crib IMO - you can give baby the same feeling of security by making a kind of doughnut shape out of rolled up towels under the cot sheet and then they're used to being there - many a crib to cot transition drama on MN!

We had a candide carrycot too though which was great for going out - very light, squished flat and generally survived vomit much better than wicker - it gets stuck in all those lttle gaps - ew!

naps were in the carrycot, night time in the cot - it's good to get them used to sleeping in different places as it's much easier when you go out.

For DD1 had both used basket for about 3 months and ound it usefull to transport round. Then a swinging crib which was also used.

DD2 however hated moses basket - wouldn't settle in it. Had got rid of crib by then so put her into cot at 1 week and she slept fine! She was a bigger baby though maybe that made a difference

Amby Nature's Nest. Fab, fab, fab - cosy, helps babies sleep better and doubles up as a travel cot as well.

Having said that, we did have an old Moses basket as well for downstairs naps in the early days.

oooggs · 02/07/2007 21:20

didn't use either, had ds1 in bassinette part of travel cot until he outgrew it weight wise then into the cot. Have put the dt's straight into the cot together.

DoubleBluff · 02/07/2007 21:20

HAd both used Moses basket most but still not very much.

amateurmum · 02/07/2007 21:21

Moses basket definitely - ds2 and dd both slept in this and I could set it up downstairs or when out for the day. We also put it inside cot at night for extra security (from older siblings) and to get them used to cot.

DS1 had swinging crib which he hated - never spent more than 5 minutes in it - perhaps it was the swinging he didn't like but in any case was not possible to move it from room to room.

Hmmm.

My only thoughts against moses basket are that my last two babies were over 10lbs and therefore outgrew it quickly!

CRIB!!!
Haven't read the other messages but my LO was prem and we got through two moses baskets (they warped!) and now wished I'd have bought a crib as it would have lasted longer and easier to store for any other babies that follow!

I did find having somewhere they could sleep that you could keep near you REALLY useful though I know alot of people think they are a waste of £ but I personally would recommend it!

MadamePlatypus · 02/07/2007 21:31

Moses basket good for carrying ironing around after baby has outgrown. Also can be used as boat. However, both DS and DD grew out of it by 8 weeks. I think Cribs are a bit more comfy and you can see out of them too. Crib lasted till 6 months for DD and she is quite big.

MadamePlatypus · 02/07/2007 21:32

I should add that a cot wouldn't have fitted in our bedroom.

bagsundereyes · 03/07/2007 08:25

You can have my moses basket free for postage if you want to try one - see the ad in for sale . My LO loved it but has just outgrown it.

RGPargy · 03/07/2007 10:31

What's a crib?? i thought it was just an american word for cot??

Hopeitwontbebig · 03/07/2007 10:50

Hi RG, it's one of those small swingy cots on a stand type thing.

Hang on, I'll see if I can get a pic for you........

there you go

That's really kind of you bagsundereyes! I see that you have someone already interested though. Don't want to steal it from them!!

Thanx Hope! After seeing that tho, I wouldn't have even entertained getting one. IMO they seem like just another sleepy thing to lure baby-drunk new parents to spend their money on.

Hopeitwontbebig · 03/07/2007 11:15

There's one on that page that seems to be the same, if not cheaper than a moses basket though!

I just remember thinking that my babies didn't look very stable in their moses baskets. They were very big and very strong, and the moses baskets would wobble quite a bit!!!!
