UTI query

Hospital midwife has diagnosed a UTI following my last checkup and urine sample despite me having no other symptoms, I'm just waiting for my GP to get the prescription instruction from the hospital and I'll be starting antibiotics. I've never had a UTI and other than burning sensation, increased frequency and possibly blood wouldn't know what the symptoms are, well today I've woken up and my outer labia feel sore and swollen, could this be connected to the UTI or is it just coincidence.

That definitely could be connected as the infection might get worse before it gets better, so always best to start antibiotics as soon as 👍🏻

I found out I had a UTI when I was pregnant and never had a symptom, but a year earlier I had one and had every symptom going! A 12 hour hospital shift nearly killed me! (Not literally... haha)

Thanks for the reply I'm hopefully collecting my antibiotics today and I've an appt with the midwife next week so we'll see how things go and all being well it'll soon clear up with the medication.

I frequently suffer with them and had a nasty one in pregnancy without usual symptoms.
I did notice I was a bit itchy so I think they can definitely irritate the external parts also.
They are common and a right pain!

I have also been told I have a uti. I had a bit of bleeding on Friday so I booked a private scan on Saturday. I was 4 weeks 4 days and everything was normal. Yolk sac was high up in my uterus she said there was no obvious reason for bleeding. I continued to bleed Saturday Sunday and Monday so was told to go to epau. They examined me and my cervix was closed so said that was reassuring. She suspected a bit as I had lower back pain aswell. I've been taking the anti biotics since Monday. I'm still bleeding today. I'm not in for a scan until the 11th of February and I feel like I'm waiting on something going wrong. There's no pain, no clots just blood when I wiped. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm 5 weeks and 1 day pregnant now

Not when pregnant but I have had blood with a UTI when I had Cystitis.
I know they can irritate the uterus which is why they can cause pre term labour in later pregnancies. It could just be that but understand why you would be concerned.
I would keep an eye on the level of the bleeding and go to the assessment unit if you are concerned.

Thank you for replying. It is just there when I wipe but it's constantly on my mind. I'll keep an eye on it for now. Thanks again x

I had blood when I wiped and could see blood in the toilet a few times. I immediately thought it was something wrong with baby but it was actually blood in my urine from an infection x

I have a uti, which I've now realised has different symptoms to my 'normal' uti symptoms. They're refusing to give me antibiotics without first doing a urine culture. They've rejected my first sample from two days ago (they've previously rejected my samples multiple times for my 28 week bloods). I'm anxious they'll keep rejecting my samples (it's an issue with my middle and surnames) and they'll continue to not treat this infection. this doesn't seem to be normal practice or recommended guidance (which is to treat right away and adjust meds if necessary). Earliest I will likely get antibiotics now is a week from initially finding the infection (which I now recognise I've probably had for about a week to nine days).

I understand that antibiotic resistance is a bad thing. But is the line we should be drawing on a heavy pregnant woman at increased risk of the infection becoming more serious?

I'm 35 weeks tomorrow. I've got decreased urine output, some stinging around my urethra on the outside and going more frequently than I have been, but hardly weeing. I normally get a uti once every 1-2 years.

What can I do? This anxiety is keeping me awake (that and severe pelvic girdle pain). I just want it to get treated, as I know having this infection when I give birth can be passed onto the baby and could be dangerous for her undeveloped immune system! You can tell I'm panicking, right?!

Hi @physicskate.
This doesn't seem like normal practice.
I was hospitalised for 3 days due to extremely high protein levels accompanied with my UTI. I was put on antibiotics immediately with blood pressure monitoring every 4 hours.
Despite blood pressure being fine, I was not released until the culture proved that the protein could be attributed to the UTI.
The culture came back after 3 days and showed I was put on the wrong antibiotics but the levels had still dropped significantly so the wrong antibiotics must have been doing something! I was given a new lot and had to take them for a week which cleared it up.
The UTI caused me to contract at 34 weeks which is how I ended up at the hospital and skipped the GP completely. Could you maybe go up to your MAU and see if they could help?

Hi @physicskate, I agree that doesn’t sound good. I currently have a UTI that has caught me by surprise by the symptoms and how quickly it came on. I went to my local walk in centre and they dispensed antibiotics immediately but did say I would need to do a sample in case there was a more effective antibiotic available. Is there a walk in centre near you? They were great and said they treat the symptoms, not the test in the first instance. I’m only 20 weeks but have been really concerned about it becoming a kidney infection as I’ve had a lot of one sided back pain
