Anterior placenta

Hi all! Does anyone have experience with anterior placenta? Did you feel baby kick later?
Did it impact birth at all?

I’m 21 weeks tomorrow and have anterior placenta. I started feeling some movements over the last week and my first definite kick a couple nights ago. Also interested to hear what others say about whether it affected their birth etc.

Hopehope20 · 28/01/2019 23:14

I had anterior...I felt baby kick early from about 17 weeks which I know is unusual. The only time I even thought about it again was later on in pregnancy when baby would sometimes move right behind it and kicks would be less...hence more trips to triage for reduced movements. Didn't impact labour at all

Apparently mine is anterior - have felt kicks & movement since really early on, currently at 32 weeks.

I have an anterior placenta aswell. They do say that despite your placenta being anterior it can also be slightly to right or left or lower down so to think of it as a cushion between baby and you.

I felt what I would describe as like a phone vibrating on my right side low down at about 19 weeks/20 weeks and then from 23 weeks like a muscle twitch again on my side. Yesterday 24 weeks laying in bath and still, def felt a few mighty kicks.

I seem to be feeling them just at side tho as I guess my placenta is muffeling them.

My midwife said some women don’t feel the movement with anterior placenta untill 25 weeks so not to worry, if you’re worried or passed this time have a chat with your midwife.

If I lay on my left side this sometimes brings on movement as does a cold orange juice!

I have an anterior placenta... my previous 2 pregnancies were posterior so it’s been very different for me. I’m 28 weeks tomorrow and only JUST feeling what I would count as proper kicks. I feel nothing on my belly - only very low down or right at either side. I would say I get 5% of movement in comparison to previous pregnancy. I have been very anxious but luckily the midwife has been very sympathetic and offered me the opportunity to pop in for the occasional Doppler so set my mind (and hers) at ease, as at 24 weeks was feeling nothing at all. I’m assured it won’t affect labouring at all and just been told to be extra vigilant with monitoring movements. Take it one day at a time... good luck op!

An anterior position is perfectly normal - it doesn't impact on birth at all. You won't feel kicks as much but otherwise it makes no difference.

GoodMornin · 29/01/2019 10:18

Thanks for all your advice and experiences.
It's actually my wife that is pregnant. She is 21 weeks today and has not felt anything much yet apart from a few flutters. We know everything is ok as we have had the 20 week scan and he (we are having a boy!!) is perfectly healthy and very active.
Just hoping she feels some proper kicks soon as obviously I'm keen to feel him! Thank you all

I had one. Felt kicks around 17 weeks. She was the worst kicker ever towards the end of the pregnancy, so the anterior placenta didn't seem to make any difference then! No issues at birth, even with an EMCS.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 29/01/2019 10:27

Just another one here who had an anterior placenta for first baby. I felt lots of kicks from about 19 weeks but my husband probably didn’t feed them until around 25 weeks. No impact on the birth.

Bee4S · 29/01/2019 10:33

@GoodMornin Firstly congratulations! We are expecting a boy as well Smile I have an anterior placenta, started feeling kicks around the 20week mark and mainly quite low down. My husband didn't feel anything on the outside at that stage. I think it was probably a couple of weeks on from then that he felt anything and that would be only on the strongest kicks. But again, quite low down. It ramps up quite quick though I'd say. Good luck with your wife's pregnancy!

OutPinked · 29/01/2019 10:51

I had one with three of my DC. I didn’t feel kicks any later or any less frequently but did have a back to back Labour 2/3 times.

DizzyMerry · 29/01/2019 12:00

I have an anterior placenta. Felt flutters around week 17 and then nothing much at all until after my 20 week scan. I then started getting some proper kicks from 25 weeks.

Like another pp, my midwife also said some women with an anterior placenta won’t feel movement until 25 week onwards.

Melrose86 · 29/01/2019 20:09

I have an anterior placenta and didnt properly start feeling strong movements til about 22 weeks x

Josiefuzz · 29/01/2019 20:21

I didn't feel strong movements until later, maybe 23 weeks ISH. We went to maternity unit A LOT as I didn't feel kicks/movement on some days after that time. Often when they put the trace on, my son was doing the macarena and I could hear the thumps but I couldn't feel anything! Midwives very reassuring that they would sooner I visited them everyday if concerned about lack of movement. You get to learn what's normal it definitely makes it more tricky!

Frizzy1986 · 29/01/2019 21:06

I had an anterior placenta in my last pregnancy. I never got any huge kicks, it was all fairly chilled. I feel I missed out a little bit but it was probably a good thing.

Teddyreddy · 29/01/2019 21:12

I had a placenta at the back with DC1 and first felt movements at 15/16 weeks. With DC2, it was anterior and I didn't feel anything until 21/22 weeks - I was convinced something was wrong when I went for my 20 week scan. For the next 2 months, I felt movement mostly down my sides - presumably round the edges of the placenta.

With DC1 later in pregnancy I had what felt like sharp pointy elbows scrapping against my front from the inside later in pregnancy. With DC2 it wasn't as bad - the anterior placenta definitely helped cushion it.

DC1 was back to back, DC2 rotated at the start of labour but I'm not sure the placenta position had anything to do with it, rather than my body being better at labour 2nd time round.

Thanks all for your replies! Fingers crossed he'll start kicking soon Smile
