Twins - cot bed or moses basket???

I have got the exciting news that I am having twins in August!

However I have no idea about sleeping arrangements.

I know the lullaby Trust states its best for babies to have their own sleeping surface in same room as me for six months, so initially I was planning on a cot bed in our bedroom which would eventually be moved into the nursery.

However there is no way two would fit in our master bedroom along with the rest of the furniture! Moses basket seems so wasteful as they only last few weeks/months, but I guess are handy for downstairs sleeping.

I was also thinking of putting the twins in the same cot bed, feet to foot at opposite ends of the bed.

What do other carers of twins do? Any and all advice appreciated.

Hi
Our twins shared a cot bed until they were 7 months (and onestarted rolling!)
We were lent two Moses baskets which we used downstairs for day time for a few months.
Congratulations... twins are the best :)

Thank you so much for that! How did you manage daytime naps after the twins outgrew the moses basket?

We had a soft mat under their play mat and sometimes they fell asleep on that! Otherwise I had a soft blanket for them/they would lie on me. Invariably they would fall asleep in pram or in car when we were out and about, until we got in the habit of them going down in cots :)

If you get a double travel system with carrycots that are safe to be used for sleeping overnight (check the specs of the system as not all can) then you could have them in those for a while?

Mine were in separate Moses baskets in our room to begin with, then separate cot beds in their own room after a few weeks. One of them hated sharing a bed and would scream until her sister was removed so that was never an option for us Smile

We used the baskets for toy/teddy storage for years after they’d outgrown them

I am considering two cot beds, one for downstairs and the other for upstairs. When they outgrow being able to sleep together, I'll move both upstairs I think.

I have plenty of time to work out the logistics!

I am also having twins (congratulations btw), late May - I have bought a cot bed that they will share in our room for the first few months, then we will buy another and move them to their own room. For downstairs I am going to get the boxes from babyboxco - they ask you to sign up and watch videos which I found helpful, answer a quiz and you get them for free if you are near a pick up point, otherwise postage is like 6 or 7 quid. they have nappies and wipes in them too I think.

I have heard about the box Co, but as far as I am aware, they aren't available where I live (Northern Ireland)

Friend of ours has a double bed with two sleepyheads either side. Husband in other bed. Works well if breastfeeding.

We put both in the same cot but tbh they outgrew that arrangement at about 4 mos. One learnt to "scooch" down the bed till he had bashed the other's head.

Thereafter we did Snuzpod plus cot then when DT1 outgrew the Spod, 2 x cots. You can only walk sideways in our bedroom now 😅

We had twins 3 days ago, at the moment they are sharing a Moses basket for daytime naps although that won't last for long and sharing a next to me at night. Once they have put grown the next to me they will go into a shared cot bed. They seem to be happiest when snuggled together so not sure what we'll do about daytime naps when they are out of the shared Moses basket

TidaQuel · 27/01/2019 20:43

Mine shared a cot for the first 6 months and still share now whenever they can, 9 years later!!

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 27/01/2019 20:52

I tried Moses baskets with mine but they hated them. They then shared a cot perfectly happily. And then a bed till they were 10! (They did have their own beds but always liked to share)

They're teens now and don't like being near each other. Make the most of the snuggly times. Grin

Oooh interesting! Been thinking the same as twins here due in august! Not sure what to do! Hoping to breastfeed so not sure how it would work with cot? Dd currently in the next 2 me which she is just about ready to be moved out of.

My twins are due in April. I'm going with shared cot in our room as my first plan. I'm buying a pair and plan to keep the other one downstairs for daytime naps If it turns out they don't like sharing I'll probably buy two separate Moses baskets. Our bedroom is huge but it would still be very crowded with two cots in it. But since I'll need the cots at some point anyway I might as well try getting them to share first and if it works then it saves buying Moses baskets etc. unnecessarily.
