Moses basket or bedside crib

Hi all

I'm in the process of looking at what I need to buy for baby's sleep in the first 6 months. Do I need a bedside crib AND a moses basket? I obviously want little one to snooze in the living room or wherever I am during the day but don't want to be carting something hefty around the house all day. What did everyone else do? Having a crib, moses basket and a cot for when he's older seems excessive. First timer here so I know if I go into Mothercare to ask questions I'll be the dream customer and end up with 15 different sleeping options!!

I’ve actually gone for all 3 but simply because we live in a 3 storey house. We’ve got a Moses basket & poddle pod for downstairs, a cot bed in the nursery on the first floor and a bedside crib in our bedroom on the second floor

DD was only in her Moses basket for a few weeks before she grew out of it.

This time we've gone for a snüzpod for next to our bed. Then will use the carry cot from the pram for downstairs

We’ve bought the Sleepyhead and the Chicco Next2Me. Moses baskets look cute but everyone says it’s crazy how soon their become redundant.

I'm pregnant with my first and we have bought a crib for beside our bed (opted for the babylo snug crib - I wanted something mesh but not too big). I plan on using the carrycot on the pram downstairs for baby to sleep in.

We started off with just a Moses basket, by 10 weeks he didn't want to sleep in it at night and we bought a (second hand - bought new mattress for SIDS reasons but still huge saving) Next To Me which lasted until he was 5.5 months. We loved the bedside crib but they're expensive, some babies don't get on with them and Moses baskets are cheap - I think with baby stuff you should always start with the most basic, cheap option and only splash out the big cash if it's not working for you (which is why I also think it's crazy when people spend a couple of hundred quid on a Sleepyhead for a baby who isn't yet here - they're great for babies who won't settle any other way but wait to find out if yours is one of those first!). As a pp said, if you decide to go straight for a bedside crib a pram carrycot is a good option - or you might get one of those who will only sleep in the day on you/in the sling!

We bought a next to me crib to use in the bedroom and planned to use carrycot on pram in the living room. Had a small baby and he wouldn't settle in the next to me crib. A friend loaned us a Moses basket and we used it for a few weeks before using the bedside crib.

Thanks all, pram carrycot it is I think rather than a moses basket. SO many things to buy!

We have gone for a tutti banbini bedside crib. You can adjust the height for reflux etc which is useful.

Going to use the pram carry bit and bouncer for downstairs. I've never known a baby stay in a moses basket for more than a month so not worth it to me.

mrsed1987 · 26/01/2019 20:17

We are using a moses basket upstairs and the travel cot from the pram downstairs, when we arent cuddling him to sleep lol

Newyearsameoldshit · 26/01/2019 20:21

We went Chicco next to me in the bedroom, planned to use bassinet from pram downstairs - baby had other ideas and slept on me or in sling during the day.
Got a Poddlepod (about 30 quid I think) when she was a bit bigger and had some nap success with that.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 26/01/2019 20:22

We have a Moses downstairs and a crib in our room. Cotbed in the nursery for when she moves there at around 6 months.

Have done the same with all three and seems to work for us.

We've had a family crib so not too expensive and they have shared two cotbeds (well they will have if that makes sense!)

Would have been one but eldest still using his as a toddler bed 😊.

Heyha · 26/01/2019 20:27

I'm hoping next2me for bedtime and pram carrycot for daytime (and bouncy rocker thing sometimes maybe) will do for all the times I'm not being used as a human mattress...not a single person has said a Moses basket is a must, quite the opposite!

Endofrelationship · 26/01/2019 20:29

We have a bedside crib in our room, a Moses basket downstairs and a cot ready in babies room. We bought them all second hand so didn't cost much (and got new mattresses).

fedupandlookingforchange · 26/01/2019 20:36

I bought a cheap supermarket Moses basket for night time having taken the advice on mn that it wouldn’t be used for long. DS was in it for 7 months until he couldn’t lay flat in it anymore.
In the day I used the pram. I’m really glad I didn’t get a bedside crib as I had a c section in the end and wouldn’t have been able to get in and out of bed with a bedside crib.

TerriB1984 · 26/01/2019 20:59

We bought a snuzpod bedside crib. Didn’t bother with a Moses basket as so many people told me how quickly they grow out of them. One of the reasons we opted for snuzpod over other bedside cribs was because the bassinet part could be lifted off the stand. So in the first few weeks we used to bring this downstairs during the day. We stopped bothering after that as DD would only nap on me! She lasted 6 months in it though before we moved her in to her cot bed so for us it was worth the expense.

MulderitsmeX · 26/01/2019 21:08

The moses baaket is my biggest buying regret. Bedside cot, pram bassinet then large cot would be my recommendation
.
Nezt time i might get a sleepyhead too but its not necessary

ReaganSomerset · 26/01/2019 21:13

If you get a big moses basket they last much longer than some PP have said. Ours came from asda, cost £30 and lasted until DD was three and a half months old (91st centile, so not a small baby) but the ones I saw in mamas and papas were tiny!

I got both, she slept in her basket downstairs before we went up to bed at night and in her next 2 me once we'd gone up. We followed safe-sleep guidance to the letter so she had to sleep downstairs with us until we went to bed. I'd get both, but get a good sized moses basket.

ReaganSomerset · 26/01/2019 21:15

My DD refused to go in her pram carrycot at all though. Screamed immediately upon being put in it! Some babies can sleep in them though, so maybe best to see if yours will before you buy a basket.

Notquiteagandt · 27/01/2019 15:27

Snuzpod is good as you can lift the top bit off to have as a bassinett in the day. And it is a cosleeping crib.

BringMeThatHorizon · 27/01/2019 15:42

The Moses basket was our biggest waste of money. My now 15 week old slept in it a grand total of 3 times. We have a sleepyhead which he much prefers and can takes up less space/can be easily moved around. He's in a next to me crib at night and I love being able to see him and calm him down without getting out of bed.
