I am a first time mum to be in 6 weeks. Already know I will be bottle feeding. Anyone have any preferences on the milk formulas above? I am not sure which to use.

Check out what your supermarket sells, and then what your local 24/7 grocery store sells.

Pick the brand that both stock to start with and take it from there.

Blimey the breast feeding police are out today !! You have to do whatever suits you and your baby at the end of the day !!
some mums go through such stress with breastfeeding and then don't produce enough milk which equals hungry, crying baby and upset mum.
If you do think bottle feeding is the key-
I would perhaps try a few of those little pre- made formulas first and see which is better. You may need to try out a couple of different teats too as some babies adapt better to different flows and shapes.
All the best !!

I use Aptamil - it has a leveller in it so you don't need a clean knife to level the formula on the scoop.

To make it, I sterilse all the bottles I need in 1 go and fill them with the right amount of freshly boiled water. Stick them in the fridge. when the time comes, add the formula and microwave. make sure you shake it though or it can gee too hot round the edges and not in the middle.

Hi, I was advised to put my son on SMA which he was completely fine with to start with but recently he's been throwing it back up a lot, sometimes huge amounts too. I'm unsure if I should try him with another milk or not? I have heard aptamil is one of the best?

This is an old thread so you're probably better starting one of your own for more answers but to answer your question My midwife said that mamia milk from aldi is the same as aptamil. I would speak to your health visitor before changing milks though.

Have you considered Hipp? I've breastfed both of mine, so no personal advice... but I took part in some market research this week and was pleasantly surprised to learn more about them... they are organic, use sustainably sourced palm oil. (Be wary of certain brands saying they are palm oil free as actually palm oil is the closest fatty substitute to breast milk, so those that are free of it, are actually missing those essential fats. But it's important that the palm oil is ethically and sustainably sourced.)
Although I'm not big on formula or the companies, I was quite impressed that their cows are free range, pastures are pesticide free etc. Apparently, this isn't the same for all companies!

Interesting article by Which:

The best infant formula

So, are some infant formula brands better than others?

No, there's no real difference between the different formulas on the UK market.

The composition of all infant formula and follow-on formula in the UK is strictly controlled under The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula (England) regulations. This means the core ingredients of all formulas are identical.

Claims such as ‘Closest to breast milk’, 'Gold advanced System' and 'Complete nutrition' are meaningless as the exact ingredients of breast milk are unknown and change according to a baby’s age and feeding patterns. However, it's estimated that breast milk contains around 300 ingredients compared with 75 in infant formula.

There's one organic range available on the market - HiPP Organic - however, the pesticide residue level is set at very low levels even in non-organic formulas (residue levels must not exceed 0.01mg/kg of the reconstituted or ready-for-consumption product).

I used SMA with my first 2 but always felt it a bit rich for them - no idea why i felt that really. After research have decided not to use SMA again. Don't feel Aptamil is worth the extra cost - look into how its advertised as a 'premium ' brand to warrant it's price tag and how they target HCP's so why it's often offered in hospitals etc. Cow and Gate is the same company as Aptamil so will be giving that a go this time.

Honestly, i really don't think it matters if your baby doesn't have an allergy that needs prescription milk.

Apparently all new born formulas (which can be used until they’re on solids) are pretty much identical regardless of the branding because there are such strict legal standards. So buy the cheapest!
