Encephaloceles

Hi all. Hope the new year is treating everyone well. I am on my first pregnancy and had low B12 for the first 6 weeks of the pregnancy. So, I am worried about neural tube defects. I had my 13 week scan two days ago and the sonographer saw the spine and said that the skull was in tact. I have read that encephaloceles may not be present or visible at 13 weeks.

Has any had the skull intact at 13 weeks and had an encephalocele develop after this? I am thinking of having a private scan at about 16-17 weeks as an extra check before the anomaly scan.

Thanks for your help.

It's folate that is necessary to prevent tube defects not b12 so your low b12 won't be an issue.
If the sonographer said the skull and spine are intact why do you think they are wrong/ lying? If there was any concern they wouldn't put their neck on the line by saying it was all fine.
Take a good multivitamin and enjoy your pregnancy

Thanks Cariadx but B12 is also a risk factor. Low B12 increases the risk of neural tube defects five-fold. I just don't know how visible things are. I have read people talking about the 12 week scan being fine and the encephalocele turning up after this but I don't know if they had that detail. She didn't say there was no risk of encephalocele. Unfortunately multivits aren't going to help my B12, I have had bowel surgery and will be on injections for the rest of my life.
