First midwife appointment

What happens at this first midwife appointment? I'm seven weeks and have my first midwife appointment in three weeks. Wondering if they'll do a scan or will i need to wait for the next appointment?
Or, are early scans worth it? The place near me does them for £70...
My friend lent me her at home doppler- is it feasible to find a heartbeat around 8 weeks? I really just want to make sure it's not all in my head because right now i feel like it is(besides the constant nausea, heartburn, and wind)!
Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!

In my first appointment at 11 weeks they gave me paperwork, took blood pressure, weight, health history, asked about personal circumstances and booked my first scan for 12 weeks at the hospital. I also paid for a private scan at 9 weeks because I was very worried about mc and it was lovely but not at all necessary

Also really wouldn't recommend using a Doppler, especially not so early. It took ages for midwife to find heartbeat for me at 16 weeks and she is an expert. My friend used one and found it made her panic when she couldn't find it and also felt like she had to use it constantly to "make sure". Baby has so much room to hide in the early stages I personally think they just cause anxiety

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I had my first appointment today (10 weeks), lasted about an hour. I was weighed, had my blood pressure done, gave a urine sample and had bloods taken. The rest of the time was going through paperwork and my medical history and an overview of the various appointments coming up. She booked my 16 week appointment there and followed up with an email to arrange my scan which is done separately at 12 weeks(ish). I think 8 weeks is too early to find a heartbeat (a midwife wouldn't even try at this point) and my midwife was very insistent that home dopplers are a very bad idea.

I've had a private early scan too and, for me, it was totally worth it but I know not everyone feels the same way.

Mine was at 8 weeks, and took about an hour. Midwife took my blood pressure, did a urine test (for protein and sugar etc.), and entered my medical history into the computer (which was then turned into a paper file which I've had to lug around to every appointment, and even my GP at the same practice doesn't have access to the same computer system - I don't think the 21st century has quite caught on here yet!). My midwife did not book the 12 week scan, I got a letter from the hospital with the date later. She did book me in for the next appointment with her at 16 weeks.

No scan or heartbeat done at the booking appointment, but I did have a private scan at 7 weeks which for me was great. Like you I was also terrified I had somehow imagined it all, and seeing the little blob with a heartbeat was very reassuring!

You won't find a heart beat with a Doppler at 8 weeks. It will just be booking you in and asking questions about family health. Try and be patient. The first trimester feels like it lasts forever and I remember it feeling unreal but now I'm a 38 week whale and can't believe where the time has gone. Personally I wouldn't shell out for an early scan unless you have history of miscarriage. X
