My baby is crashing round in there a lot today (as usual), does this mean labour not likely? Is it true they go quiet before labout starts?

I didn't notice any quiet spells from my babes either time!!

123V · 04/09/2004 21:32

I don't remember her going quiet, I do remember going from practically vegetarian to craving steak a few days before - building up for the effort?

Lolabelle · 04/09/2004 21:59

I'm 41 weeks tomorrow and my baby is going mad all the time - not so I am worried or anything but a hell of a lot of movement and I was wondering the same?? Also got a lot of stitch like pains down my lower right side but no period like pains otherwise i'll be very excited!

Lot of movement though and my bump visibly moves about constantly - God I hope its soon...

MummyToSteven · 04/09/2004 22:00

i don't remember him going quiet. I remember thinking the head was engaged the day before, but that was about it

dinny · 04/09/2004 22:36

When the bagy moves I keep getting stabbing pains down vagina...quite strong. DH keeps thinking I'm about to pop baby. Anyone else had these/know what they are?

Not a midwife but does not sound like contractions or any sign of labour, does sound like babies head is well down and maybe pressing on a nerve? Not sure dinny but mears will know, if it is really painful maybe chat to your midwife?

Turtle35 · 06/09/2004 11:36

I asked GP last week about pains shooting through vagina and she said it was just the baby's head that pops up and down. How many weeks are you Dinny? Hope it's the start for you if you are due

mears · 06/09/2004 12:16

It is a myth about babies going quiet before labour starts. They still move - right up to the point of delivery

There are all sorts of pressure points in pelvic region and I think that sometimes th epressure exerted by the baby's engaging hhead leads to pain in the vagina. There is a lot of loosening of ligamnets etc which also has an effect. Hopwfully it won't be too long Dinny. The baby is occupying a loy of space as well as the added weight of afterbirth and water. It can get pretty uncomfortable at times.

I get stabbing pains at times and I'm not even pregnant [amile]

Fingers crossed for you.

mears · 06/09/2004 12:16

even

kbaby · 06/09/2004 12:44

I never noticed the baby going quiet and remember it moving the morning I started having contractions. I used to also get stabbing pains through my vagina and one night it was constant. I used to think it was where the baby was engaged and perhaps moving its head from side to side.

Turtle35 · 06/09/2004 13:58

Mears you sound very knowledgable are you in the medical field? are you trying for a baby?

smellymelly · 06/09/2004 14:20

Mears is our resident midwife - and very useful she is too!!!

She has even had a thread started just to praise her!

Turtle35 · 06/09/2004 14:31

How incredibly handy!!

dinny · 06/09/2004 21:19

Ow ow ow! Blooming stabbing pains! Had mw app today and she said same as you, Mears - engaged head bouncing around. They do always coincide with baby moving. Hope the fact I'm finding them uncomfy doesn't mean my pain threshold has gone really low!
I coerced mw into guessing weight of baby today -she reckons 9lbs ish. UH OH.

OP posts:
littlemel · 06/09/2004 21:27

Can they tell the babys weight? I trie to ask my mw but she was very cagey about it. Think its going to be a whopper as I am HUGE! But only 4 foot 11 so bit worried about size of my pelvis as have heard it is related to height.
My baby is really lazy and hardly moves - am 40 weeks.

linnet · 06/09/2004 21:32

I remember those stabbing feelings Dinny, babies head I was told like your midwife said.
I don't remember her ever being quiet before labour started although I do remember my dd2 kicking me while I was in labour, every time I had a contraction I could feel her feet pushing against the top of the bump up by my ribs, maybe she was trying to get a foothold to propell her out,
hope it all goes well for you.

mears · 06/09/2004 21:38

As a midwife I can tell you that O am hopeless at guessing the weight. Don't think it help really. Doesn't it just make you cr*p yourself that you might have a 9lb baby? Can't see the benefit really

littlemel · 06/09/2004 21:40

yes, i am definitely c**ing myself Mears.....can you tell me if there is any truth in short people having difficult labours???!!

dinny · 06/09/2004 21:58

I have feeling baby is quite big - well, much bigger than dd anyway.
I am crapping self with fear anyway Mears

Ok complete novice here I'm 16+4 and I have been getting a few belly pains for the last 2-3 weeks, nothing cripling just like stich/cramp, and they've been all over low down to the left, right middle etc. sometime just one pain in a whole day or even 2 days, sometimes have them on and off all day? As I say nothing too bad pain level being 1-10 I'd say between 4-5. Is this normal? should I worry? DH thinks it's just cos there is a lot happening inside at the mo and lots of bits having to move? Anyone else had this? I'm not due for my 20 wk scan til 6th October.

artyjoe · 13/09/2004 17:53

Hi StaceyK

I had this for weeks, it's just the ligaments pulling by the sounds of it. I've had no twinges for a few weeks now but got a gentle thud in my belly button today for the first time, so finally may be able to join everybody else in feeling the baby!

Hope you are well - Joe

froggiebaby · 13/09/2004 20:28

hello, and HELP - how much truth is there in 'heretitary' birth weight stories??? I'm at 29 weeks and the doc has said that it's a pretty big lad already. In my family, the average birth weights are all around 10lbs..... god almighty, does this mean what I think ???!!!

It doesn't help that I live in France - where they all seems to have dainty 6lb-ers, and they're starting to look at me as if I'm a freak.

Any advice or moral support gratefully received!!

froggiebaby · 13/09/2004 20:32

Oh - I forgot - does anyone have any tips for encouraging baby to get his feet out from under my ribs..... it doesn't hurt much, but is pretty uncomfortable - however I move around doesn't seem to help?
