Should I call MAU if I suspect a UTI?

I’m a little worried I may have a UTI. I have a sharp sensation in my bladder and need to wee every five minutes. The urine itself is fine (pale, no blood or pain when it passes, no odour). I also seem to be having quite frequent contractions, but I don’t suspect labour or anything like that - I think it’s more like the “irritable uterus” I got when I had a UTI in last pregnancy.

Should I call the MAU? Or wait and see GP tomorrow (already have an appointment for something else)

Forgot to mention feeling generally unwell.

May be worth going to MAU to be dealt with quicker depending on how you’re feeling - uti at the best of time is annoying let alone when preg. Hope you feel better soon

I don’t want them to think I’m a time waster!

Call them. I was kept in for 3 days with one! They would rather you got checked.

HenweeArcher · 22/01/2019 17:41

If it’s causing an irritable uterus, they’d rather see you and sort it.

PrincessPee · 22/01/2019 17:43

Please call assessment unit. Much better to be checked whilst you and baby are relatively well then in a pickle later in preterm labour with possible urinary sepsis - and of it turns out not to be a UTI and there is nothing wrong then you’ve had a chat and got yourself peace of mind x

worried77 · 22/01/2019 19:15

The contractions have stopped now and I haven’t had to rush to the loo recently, so maybe I was over-reacting (typical!)

If things stay as they are, I’ll wait and see the GP tomorrow. If I worry again this evening, I’ll call in. Definitely don’t want preterm labour Shock

It’s not time wasting that’s what they are there for - best to get it checked never know what’s going on internaly 🤷🏾‍♀️

It is a UTI Sad weird how the urine isn’t really affected and if it wasn’t for the irritable uterus, I would have just ignored it.

At least you can get sorted with antibiotics! You wouldn’t believe how many women do have UTIs in pregnancy that they wouldn’t otherwise realise!

Ok, so quick update and more reassurance needed.

I’ve been taking the ABs since Wednesday afternoon. Yesterday felt unwell most of the day, very nauseous and tired. Today I felt better physically (for most of the day), but have had a pain in the right side of my back, sort of below my ribs but a bit lower.

In the last hour, I’ve had some intense cramps in my tummy - I’m talking stop what I’m doing, bend over/crouch down and cry kind of pain. Upset tummy and feel sick.

What’s going on? Sad

Call MAU, tell them your symptoms and take their advice. Better to be safe, hope you feel better soon

worried77 · 25/01/2019 17:20

I tried to call MAU but they were engaged... and as quick as it started, the pain has stopped. Weird.

Did they send your urine off for a culture? I went into the MAU with cramps which turned out to be contractions caused by the UTI. They could instantly tell I had an infection but I had to wait 3 days for the culture to come back only for them to tell me I had been put on the wrong antibiotics for the bacteria.

worried77 · 25/01/2019 17:43

Yes the GP has given antibiotics but also sent the urine off to the lab and said to call back for the results next week. I’m a little worried it may have spread to my kidney, but not sure if it’s worth bothering MAU with if I already have antibiotics. As the cramps/contractions have eased, I think I’ll wait and see how I get on.

I would definitely call them if the cramps start again. They told me that UTI's can cause pre-term labour so they would rather check you. I hope you feel better soon.

worried77 · 25/01/2019 18:06

Thank you Tiny, I did have a bit of a wobble about being in pre-term labour, the pain was very intense but it literally came out of nowhere.

I’m not one for being over dramatic Wink

I was the same. I didn't have any usual UTI symptoms so was surprised when they told me the infection was quite severe.
I was kept in for 3 days because the protein levels were off the scale too and I was checked constantly for pre-eclampsia.
I just thought I had a few cramps! It's all such fun Hmm

worried77 · 25/01/2019 18:35

That sounds a bit scary! How far along were you?

OP posts:
TinyMarie · 25/01/2019 19:26

34 weeks. Once I was on the right antibiotics it was fine but I'm glad I went in!

worried77 · 25/01/2019 19:53

Glad all was ok in the end Smile
