5 weeks pregnant - couple of questions

Hello. I'm 5 weeks pregnant (26 years old) & had my first appointment with my midwife today, she is lovely. I'm very happy.

  1. I braved telling my mum and dad that I was pregnant yesterday. It didn't go down very well, dad didn't say anything at all and mum has just made every negative comment you can think of. Also saying how it's all my boyfriends fault, when it's clearly not. Has anyone else had problems with their parents? Will she come round..? I'm old enough to make my own decisions!

  2. I was offered a new job verbally before I found out I was pregnant, I haven't yet received any paperwork so haven't formally accepted it. I work in the NHS and this job will be staying within the NHS. Does anyone have any experience with SMP in this situation? Online it says "have worked for your employer continuously for at least 26 weeks continuing into the ‘qualifying week’ - the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth" and I have been working for the NHS for 6 years now. I'm wondering whether to accept the job or just stick to what I do for now.. (new job is a new challenge and more money though!)

Thank you xx

Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy!
Secondly, I was the same age as you when I was pregnant with my first (she's 2 now and I've got an 8 month old now!) but never had any issues with my parents, so can't help you there.
Thirdly, if your new role is within the NHS then surely the company policy would apply to you and you would be entitled to the full maternity leave pay, not just SMP. Maternity policies are the same for the company as a whole, not individual roles AFAIK.

I'd accept the job, I assume you're planning to return to work after your baby? Would the role still be available?

Thank you!

Yes, planning on returning to work. Thank you, that's helpful & reassuring!

Congratulations. You are 26 in a relationship and want the baby so try not to worry about your parents. Take your pregnancy vitamins. Look afte rf yourself (enjoy these months of free time). Can't help you with nhs but I went back to work after five months full time (was pregnant again) and all fell into place

Congratulations on your new job too :) I was in a similar situation to you in regards to new roles when I was newly pregnant. However, I didn't accept the role because I knew I'd be returning to work part-time.

I do remember my manager telling me that if I accepted the role, it would mean higher maternity pay. Make sure you ask your manager/HR about that too!
