Hi All,

I'm a FTM and don't know when to start buying all the lotions and potions and of course nappies!

I'm 21+5..

Also, how many of each size nappy should we get? I'm so bad at this kinda stuff Hmm

Small babies are fine with just plain water in the bath, the bubble bath products can be very drying. Talc is also advised against for health reasons.
I would only buy a few packs of first size nappies - reason being that the different brands suit different babies, some babies react to pampers but are fine with mamia, the shape and fit differ too and you won't know what suits your baby till he or she arrives.

JustMe18 · 21/01/2019 15:29

@nannyR

Oh fab! Thank you! I didn't know about talc.. How about baby creams, such as sudocreme? Or os Bepanthan the best one to begin with?

Thank you

You don't need any bubble bath, especially at first, just water will be fine. They smell so nice anyway! You also don't need talc, it's not great for their skin or to breath in.

A lot of people swear by bepanthen but I prefer susocreme iirc you sometimes get a tiny pot in your bounty bag and that will last ages.

A lot of people like to try out different brands to see which they prefer but i say try the cheapest first and see how they suit you. Are of the supermarket ones are fine imo and much of a muchness. Same with wipes really. Unscented supermarket ones will probably be fine.

@paradiselaundry

Thank you!!

I don't tend to use cream with every nappy change, although I know some parents like to. Sudocreme is as good as anything when they are a bit sore.

EyeDrops · 21/01/2019 15:35

I always preferred bepanthen to sudocrem - get a small thing of each and see which works best for your baby when they arrive.

Agree with regard to nappies - just two packs to get started, then send your partner out for more once baby's here and you've a better idea!

Stringofpearls · 21/01/2019 15:36

We've found Dove to be the best daily nappy cream, with sudocrem for any full on sore nappy rash. It might be worth buying a couple of different ones though and seeing which suits your baby best! Also a friend recommended Lansinoh nipple cream to me which was a lifesaver when I first started breastfeeding.

baabaamoomooneigh · 21/01/2019 15:37

New(ish) mum of a 1 year old here. I agree with all the advice above Grin

We like to use reusable wipes as I find they are better for getting baby really clean after a poo. I use a disposable to get the worst of it off and then I use a reusable. This is just my preference tho. If you're interested you can google and look into reusable wipes online. You might find you prefer disposables only - it's totally personal preference.

Oh remember nappy bags and little nail scissors Smile

JustMe18 · 21/01/2019 15:38

Wow! Brilliant! Thank you everyone for helping Flowers

We're not even halfway through a tube of Bepanthen and DD is 4 and a half months old. I don't use nappy cream with every nappy change, only when she looks a bit sore, which has only been twice so far. Got through quite a lot of Size 1 nappies so it's good we stocked up on those. She was barely in Size 2 for long before needing Size 3, so we still have packs of unused Size 2, so I'd advice getting some of the first size only then waiting. Used water at first for baths and now use Childs Farm baby bath. We don't use any talc, lotion or anything else on her skin. Used Water Wipes for the first two months but have since used Huggies and Johnsons wipes, whatever is on offer.

MustStopSnacking28 · 21/01/2019 15:38

The midwife advised me to use nipple cream for any redness with nappies and it worked a treat! My DS has always been lucky with little soreness but it does work. Aldi nappies are great by the way Smile and we didn’t use any bubble bath til he was 4 months so don’t worry about getting it now!

jomaIone · 21/01/2019 15:45

Child's Farm do a good nappy cream for every day use but you don't really need one as long as their skin looks ok! I've found Metanium best for nappy rash. Just pop a tiny bit on at the first sign of redness and it's gone by next nappy change!

Child's Farm body lotion is nice and gentle too. I did use this from Newborn as my baby had dry skin. The Dove sensitive stuff it lovely too. Didn't use anything in the bath as very drying but now she's older I use child's farm body wash and shampoo to wash her but still no bubble bath. They don't need it. I have used child's farm nappy cream if she has a sore chin from dribble too.

I used water and cotton wool while at home for the first 6 weeks then moved into wipes. Aldi mania have been great as have the nappies but just see what suits you. I bought a small pack of size 1s for the hospital and a big pack of size 2s which did as for a week or so. I didn't stock up really.

This isn't an ad for Child's farm 🤣

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 21/01/2019 15:46

4 month old DS here, agree with info above, we use bepanthen and love it.

Don't buy too many nappies, we bought 1 pack of first size, then tried out a few different brands to see what worked for us. One brand we tried leaked often, they just weren't suited to his body shape. We now buy a pack every week with the shop and have a spare at home. Some of my friends with babies have packets and packets left of nappies that no longer fit. Such a waste of money, as long as you have a supermarket fairly near you don't need by hundreds in stock!

I took waterwipes into hospital with me, some hospitals don't like baby wipes. Some don't even like waterwipes and advise cotton wool and water so maybe ask midwife or at the antenatal classes?

I switched away from waterwipes quickly as they are pricey and too wet for my liking. We now use reusable wipes, squares of towelling or flannel that I edged with my sewing machine. Makes me feel better about the environmental impact of the baby wipes, better for skin too.

Oysterbabe · 21/01/2019 15:49

The best cream for treating nappy rash is Metanium, in a yellow tube. It's like magic.

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2019 15:51

Don’t buy too many nappies if any type or any size until you’ve had your baby. Babies and nappies come in all shapes and sizes. You need to find what works for your baby.

JustMe18 · 21/01/2019 16:01

I love the 'Childs Farm' moisturiser.

I got one in an Emma's Diary pack and I use it on my own face (as a tester!) and its brilliant stuff!

Cookit · 21/01/2019 16:24

Honestly, I have a 2 year old and I have never used bubble bath or any kind of product like that...!

Nappy cream - I’d just buy sudocreme. It’s not a certainty that your child will get bad nappy rash and need metanium. If they do, you can go and buy that day, but it may be month or a year down the line.

baabaamoomooneigh · 21/01/2019 16:39

Yes the child's farm stuff is lovely if you do want to use a bath foam.

You sound very excited Grin it's such a lovely time getting everything ready for a new baby - enjoy!

Lolololololol · 21/01/2019 16:40

I really like asda nappies, we stocked up on different sizes while I was still pg to spread the cost (a couple of packs a month) the great thing about asda is, once DS had grown out of a size, if we had any (unopened) packs left they will let you exchange for the next size up 😃
We also love the Childs Farm bubble bath and 2in1 shampoo and body wash, it's the only. One that didn't dry out DS's skin x

hammeringinmyhead · 21/01/2019 16:43

I use:

Aveeno baby moisturiser and body wash (the moisturiser got rid of cradle cap)
Huggies 99% Water wipes - agree Water Wipes are too wet!
Wilko nappy bags
Pampers Premium Protection and Lidl nappies
Child's Farm bubble bath, occasionally for fun now he is 3 months
Sudocrem
Tesco baby non bio washing powder

OutPinked · 21/01/2019 18:55

Don’t buy too many nappies incase you don’t get along with the brand. I use reusable nappies but disposables for the first week or so until the meconium disappears. Pampers were shite, Aldi are far superior but obviously every baby is different.

Talc is a carcinogen, shouldn’t even be sold... please don’t use this.

They only need nappy cream if they’re sore. Bepanthen is best.

I personally love aldi’s Baby shampoo and night time wash. Smell the same as Johnson’s for a fraction of the price.

OutPinked · 21/01/2019 18:56

Water wipes are terrible, totally agree with pp’s. They’re far too wet. Huggies pure are great.

greenelephantscarf · 21/01/2019 19:01

Bubble bath - not needed
nappy creams - sudocreme for slight redness, metanium (the yellow stuff) for angry nappy rash
talc - not needed
nappies - whichever fit best. supermarket own are absolutely fine
wipes - not needed, flannel& warm water does a better job. if you want some for out&about any supermarket brand is fine

Endofrelationship · 21/01/2019 19:05

We didn't use anything but water until DS was 1. Never used cream at nappy changes either- he only got a sore bum if teething, so used metanium then.

Talc is bad everyone (including adults) but particularly little girls due to the increased risk of female cancers.

Wipes- we used cheeky wipes mainly but had Aldi sensitive from time to time.
