Hospital bags

Hello, I’m sure I’m not the only one with this issue so hope I don’t annoy anyone who’s answered similar threads already, but how did you stop your hospital bags from overflowing!
I’ve looked through all the lists of recommended items and have packed a bag for my dh (spare outfit, snacks, drinks and deodorant).
A bag for myself with snacks, going home outfit, pjs, old t shirt of dhs for during labour, nursing bra, maternity bra, underwear, socks, toiletries, towels, flannel and flip flops.
My baby bag consisting of three outfits including her going home one, blanket (traditional family one passed down all babies have worn in pictures so can’t leave it at home!) , swaddle, towel, two Muslim cloths, socks, hat and wipes. As well as a seperate wet bag with some reusable nappies and inserts that we’re planning to use.
The problem is that we now have three (and a half bags including the nappies and inserts) to take into the hospital with us and I’m worried the midwives will think we are taking the pee!
We won’t have our car in the car park to leave any in either as my mil is taking us to save us parking costs (she’ll be picking up the dog at the same time for however long we are in there so it helps save us money but not an extra journey for her).
Does this seem excessive to anyone else or is this normal and I’m worrying for no reason? I don’t want them thinking we’re trying to move in!

I'm a midwife and wouldn't bat an eyelid at 3 bags😄

I had a small holdall for me and another for baby/DH. The lady in the bed next to me had a large suitcase, a holdall and carrier bags!

MADASANOWL · 19/01/2019 21:59

Thankyou!
Feeling less concerned I’ve gone OTT now 😁
Just seemed strange that I can pack a carry on case for a weeks holiday yet when planning for three days in hospital have twice the amount of luggage!

You could do a scaled down bag to initial take in then have the extra bags in the car for DH to get if you end up having to stay in longer.

Always better to have more than less. I went I on my friend with a small hold all with everything off the hospital list I was given. This is 16 years later with baby number 5 and I've realised you need so much more stuff than what they advise. Take what you need and down worry. There will always be someone in there with a bag and a mountine of carrier bags from things they've sent someone to bring in. Me, I'm taking a large suitcase and a changing bag. Just make sure the bag has wheels because it's so much easier when they cart you around the labour ward etc. Honestly don't worry about how much you take, I've learnt my lesson to always be prepared xx

I meant to say *I went in with my first with a small hold all.

Damn auto correct lol

TeePeeCee · 19/01/2019 22:59

That sounds absolutely fine. For both of my deliveries, I took a small suitcase. I didn’t regret packing anything (despite not staying in the birth centre for long both times).

KathyBates · 19/01/2019 23:18

I went with a small suitcase for me (overhead locker size), babies changing bag for DS and DP had a small rucksack x

@MrsBartlettforthewin
My car won’t be there and my DH can’t drive anyway so I can’t even get him to fetch it if we did need anything. That’s part of the reason his mum is going to come get us and take us in. That and the fact she loves our dog so she’s having her for the time we’re in hospital and a few days after!

That all sounds reassuring that we won’t be the only ones packing for every eventuality.
Was starting to wish I had Mary Poppins bag!

I'm having the same worries. We're 30-40 minutes from hospital and my husband doesn't drive.
We will have to take a cab to the hospital (and not get send back home as we can't afford to go several times). Anything we need has to come with us immediately.
I'm considering taking a proper suitcase. With nappies, maternity pads and so on I just don't see how we can do it otherwise. And realistically we will need to have change of clothes for all of us, including DH as well

MissMoodyMoo · 20/01/2019 13:26
