Anyone else suffer quite bad with being constipated while pregnant? It's so painful and started 2 weeks ago, can't make it any better. I'm not sure if I can take anything for it either? 😖

There are things your GP can prescribe. How pregnant are you?

Drink as much as you can, fruit and fiber cereal, tinned prunes and tinned peaches and pears.

You can buy a prune juice too!

Lizbiz89 · 18/01/2019 15:44

Yes I've suffered with it since the birth of my dd. Had it on and off through the whole of this pregnancy. Stay hydrated and take Movicol if needed. That's safe to take in pregnancy. Hope it eases soon.

alltalknobaby · 18/01/2019 15:46

Lactulose. Safe to take when pg and you can buy it over the counter.

Cariadxx · 18/01/2019 15:58

Prunes. They're cheapest in Aldi. Saved me taking anything medication wise on many occasions. In the end I just ate 5 dried prunes a day

Porridgeprincess · 18/01/2019 16:06

Hot water and lemon on an empty stomach in the morning can be helpful too as well as suggestions above.

Melamine · 18/01/2019 16:34

Probiotics cured me, specifically kefir yoghurt drink but I have found bio yoghurt was nearly as good!

Check any pregnancy multi Vitamins you're taking. They have iron in them which bungs you up. Unless a medical professional has prescribed you iron, don't take it.

You can get just folic acid and vitamin d tablets which are all that's recommended and don't bung you up. Hope you find relief soon. It's the worst.

I got an oral solution called Dulcosoft in the chemist, pharmacist said that was fine to take. Haven’t tried it yet because prunes and fruit n fibre have been helping enough so far. Might need to try it tonight though 🙈

I’m 39+6 and taking iron for anaemia so I am super aware of constipation!

Lots of fresh OJ with bits (helps the iron absorption too)
All bran (not bran flakes)
Lentil soup

This has all kept me regular.

I had one week where my DH bought me bran flakes rather than all bran and I ended up more constipated. I bought lactulose...

I think it helped but it nearly ended my marriage, holy shit the gas is UNBELIEVABLE Confused I could have powered a small country!

I'm around 10/11 weeks, won't know exactly until first scan. I hate prunes so much , tried one last week. God awful! I haven't been to docs about it but I know most things pregnant women got to be careful about taking x

Take movicol, you can buy it over the counter at the pharmacy. I took it throughout my entire pregnancy, prescribed by my GP. Lactulose didn't work for me at all and I've heard lots of people say it made them worse.

I can't eat prunes either, but I do drink prune juice. It's much more palatable. Also beware of too much fibre. Too much can make things worse.

lightningpaw · 18/01/2019 21:40

Fibrogel, it’s a fibre drink. Lifesaver!

sonlypuppyfat · 18/01/2019 21:44

Glycerine suppositories are a life saver, sometimes you get so constipated your poo dries up and you need help passing it

PretendNothing · 18/01/2019 21:46

Prunes are good - I blend four or five up into a kind of juice/smoothie with warm water and ginger every morning, and have a fruit salad with natural yoghurt, milled linseed and oats for breakfast. I've noticed a huge difference since starting that. Also, a black coffee helps at desperate times!

wombatron · 18/01/2019 22:00

Try switching to pregnacare. A lot of the multi vitamins contain a stool softener. If I skip mine I notice a difference in movements for sure!

39Suzy · 18/01/2019 22:36

Dried apricots will do the same as prunes and taste better! About 3- 4g of fibre in each one (you need about 20g a day total so 4 or 5 a day will be plenty on top of a healthy balanced diet). And definitely keep well hydrated.

Rudgie47 · 18/01/2019 22:44

A mixed vegetable curry and plums will have the same effect as prunes. I once made a plum flapjack. Never again,I had three pieces and the next day nearly didn't make it to the works loo!

LauraBrown1 · 18/01/2019 23:04

@Rudgie47 haha at least it did the trick!

@39Suzy I've just raided the fridge and found I bought apricots on my last shopping trip so nibbling on them now 😊
