My hb levels were 10 but that was 3 weeks ago and the doc has only just found out and put me on iron tablets but she says it could well be nearer 9 now as levels had dropped fast or something.

Anyway i am 36+4 and vegetarian. I drink tonnes of orange juice, platefulls of spinach and tomato have really been trying to eat properly but i feel AWFUL. I mean like chronic exhaustion. Was just wondering if these iron tablets do actually work? The worst i feel is after brekfast. I eat my cereal and orange and within 10 minutes DH has to literally keep me awake, as well as being really dizzy. I have a 2.5 yr dd too and i feel really bad as i just cant do anything with her I have seen a few things about Spatone. Do you take this with iron tablets or instead? I am just desperate to get my levels up quickly but dont know how to.. I had a haemorrage with dd after manual placenta removal so am petrified that it will happen again and my levels will just be too low to cope. Sorry to go on but i actually feel reall depressed about the whole thing at a time when i should be looking forward to the birth. Any advice or experience would be much appreciated

Hi, I'm 35 weeks and also a veggie, I was diagnosed as anaemic a month ago, just finished a month long course of iron tablets, and feeling a LOT better. Trust me, take them. You'll be amazed how different you'll feel!

I was so anaemic that when I started taking my tablets I looked 100 times better (I had chronic sores round my mouth because of it, they went, even my dandruff went! and I'm no longer pale and washed out looking)

You'll start to feel better in days. I don't know about taking spatone with the iron tablets, I'm assuming you've been prescribed some so that's probably the maximum dose you should be taking.

Take them with orange juice as vitamin c aids iron absorption, and avoid taking them with milk as I was recently informed that calcium hinders iron absorption (just drink your milk at a different time of the day to when you take your tablets)

Hope you feel better soon, let us know how you get on!

take spatone aswell as the iron, think it is 2 sachets a day

take with orange juice and avoid tea and coffee

keep up with iron rich foods too

Hi

I have been anaemic for years and my iron levels are around 10 at the moment. In the past I have always taken ferrous sulphate tablets but apparently the absorption is not good so despite the fact they are 200mg not much of it is actually going in despite taking it with Vit C as well.

I have just started taking Spatone sachets (ordered online from Goodness Direct) and am already feeling much better. They have less iron content but because you absorb it all it seems to be far better for you so I personally would advise that.

Good luck.

I used floradix from holland and barretts, it's liquid and has all the stuff in it already to help your body absorb the iron. Tastes foul but works more quickly than iron tablets. TBH I would take the pescribed tablets and floradix for a few weeks to get levels up quickly.
