3D scan, no top of head!

I went for a gender scan a couple of weeks ago, when I was 16 weeks and the sonographer suddenly switched it to 3D for a minute or two, which was lovely and also a bit freaky. I don't think at that early a stage its a great idea though! Anyways, he gave us some pictures and off we went, however the 3D picture looks like my baby is missing the top of his head and now I can't stop worrying! Is this normal for a 3D scan?

Yes don’t worry about that! It’s very difficult to get a good 3D picture. There was someting wrong with my baby’s 3D picture, can’t remember what but looked so creepy and she was perfect when she was born

I'm not a sonographer or doctor but I think it's because of the angle they hold the probe at. Think early 00's video game where if you did it a bit wrong you'd splice people's heads off.

I've just looked at some 3d scan images a friend sent me, her dc is without the top of it's skull & was definitely born with it late last month Grin

I had a private scan at 17 weeks to find out the babies sex and she put it into 3d mode and it looked like she had a missing arm and leg! They are all there so they can definitely make things look odd xx

One that we had looked like there were no hands and a big dent in the forehead. Of course I worried at the time. Neither of those things were the case when the baby appeared!

This is my 16 week scan and mines kinda the same 😂 I think like previous post said it's all to do with angles and what they can pick up.

Thanks ladies, I kept telling myself it would be the angle but you know how it is, anxious!

If they noticed your babies head was missing i’m sure they would mention it! As other people have said, it’s just the 3D tech, it depends on angles and if there is a part it can’t see it doesn’t show it if you see what I mean.

They would have mentioned a baby with a missing head!
In our 3D scan the baby has both arms missing from the elbow down. He was born last week with all limbs present and correct!

Well that was my thoughts too, though it was a private gender scan, and specifically states not for medical purposes. He did seem to spend an awful lot of time looking at babies brain, but at the very end of the scan, he said all looked perfect. I have my actual anomaly scan on the 24th, so will probably be reassured then! Thanks again.

Even though they’re not for medical purposes if they see any obvious anomalies they will tell you.
A missing head would also have been picked up at the 12 week scan.
If you think about it, the image can only show the bit that the camera sees. As it’s 3D, the cut off point isn’t a clear line, it appears as a ‘hole’. I’ll try and attach the one I have with missing arms...

SoyDora · 17/01/2019 09:20

Here you go... his left arm is missing from the elbow. He is now safely here and has arms!
