Fainted!

14 weeks, and just went a bit dizzy in the kitchen. I went to sit down and next thing I knew, I found myself "coming to" face down on the floor! I'm home on my own (DH away for work) so I have no idea how long I was out for.

I'm guessing it's just low blood pressure, but I'm terrified that I might have hurt the baby! I've just drunk loads of water and I feel a bit better - just a bit wobbly and bruised, but otherwise alright. Now trying to decide if I pull myself together and go to work, or go back to bed and take the morning off (tempting!).

Any thoughts?! I know this can happen in pregnancy but this is my first ever faint, so I have no experience!!

I think you need to take the morning off and get checked out by your midwife

Russell19 · 16/01/2019 07:37

Stay off, all day. Happened to me not long ago but luckily my husband sorted me out. It really shakes you up though. I'm not a medical expert but I have found it helps to eat/drink when that dizzy feeling comes on. Water didn't work, I needed juice or something xx

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 16/01/2019 07:38

Could be low blood sugar, you should probably eat something

Undercoverbanana · 16/01/2019 07:43

I fainted a few times in both of my pregnancies.

Fainted at work twice, in a shop, in the library, at home, at a football match.

Both DCs now in their 20s and very healthy.

Don’t worry OP - it’s quite common.

bellainthemiddle · 16/01/2019 08:33

Thanks for the advice and reassurance! I'm taking the morning off - was getting ready to go and I came over all dizzy again. I've decided to have a quiet morning - I feel OK now, just a bit shaken up and sort of "swimmy", if that makes sense!

P. S. I guess it could be blood sugar, since I'm still struggling with sickness and not managing to eat a lot. I'm sipping lucozade - hopefully that's not a bad idea!!

Similar experience this morning 😳 definately put your feet up isn’t worth the risk

AvoidingMarking · 16/01/2019 11:49

I fainted in early pregnancy. I hadn't eaten enough. Was really sick too but I found that eating little and often helped- nuts and high protein foods.

You should also check your iron levels checked.

bellainthemiddle · 16/01/2019 12:34

Hmm, then it's perhaps worth contacting the midwife? Although I am feeling much better now!

I'd just ring and say. They will give you advice about getting a blood test at the dr if nothing else!

bellainthemiddle · 16/01/2019 15:46

Going to give them a call now. I, probably stupidly, decided that I was OK to go to work this afternoon, but I went dizzy on the tube and had to get off and go back home! I think I'm now just going to call today a write-off and hope that I'm going to be alright for work tomorrow. My boss wasn't exactly thrilled about today...

Well your boss is a 🔔 end.
Get in touch with your midwife, don't feel like you're being a burden, that's what they're there for. Rest up x

bellainthemiddle · 17/01/2019 10:07

My boss is one of those superwoman types, and finds it hard to sympathise with us mere mortals :)

I was dizzy again this morning, so I contacted the midwife and they've advised me to go to the GP today for blood tests. I'm going to have to make it into work after that though, or my manager is going to finish me off!

I fainted 3 weeks ago at 27 weeks at a physio pregnancy class Blush Blood pressure was perfect. Got bloods done few days after and I'm anaemic. Started iron this week. It could be a number of things!!

madeinthe80z · 17/01/2019 17:57

Hope it all went okay. I hate women who are like that, unfortunately we're not all the same and yes, pregnancy is not a disability, but sometimes it does make you properly unwell!!

bellainthemiddle · 20/01/2019 10:44

I didn't manage to get the bloods done, unfortunately - my GP surgery said they can't be done until I've had an appointment with the GP and they don't have anything available till February! I'm in a bit of a dilemma because I've still been feeling dizzy and fainted again on Friday, and I'm supposed to be going away for work tomorrow (to Strasbourg). I'm not really sure if it's a great idea to travel abroad, but as things stand I can't get the problem checked out or even get a sick note for the trip. Arghh!

Mummyto4weestars · 20/01/2019 10:55

Call the triage department at your local hospital and tell them your midwife suggested you need to get your bloods done as you fainted and have been feeling dizzy and faint for a few days but you are unable to get an appointment at your surgery till February. They should be able to get it sorted for you. Also explain that your supposed to go away for work tomorrow. Their number should be listed in your maternity notes. Good luck xx

bellainthemiddle · 20/01/2019 11:11

Ah, thank you - that is super helpful, I will do that right away! I feel a bit stupid now that I didn't think of that myself, but the GP surgery seemed to suggest that the only way to get the bloods done sooner would be to go to A&E and I didn't really want to do that (since it's neither an accident nor an emergency). Thanks so much!

OP posts:
Mummyto4weestars · 20/01/2019 11:47

I just hope triage can get it sorted for you. Don't think it's a good idea to travel when you feel like that, without being checked over

bellainthemiddle · 20/01/2019 13:55

Triage say it would be best to ask for an urgent GP appointment tomorrow morning :( I'm stressing now because I can't miss this trip without a sick note, but I don't actually know if the GP will give me a sick note (or an appointment!). Help!

OP posts:
Ijustwanttofeelbeautiful · 20/01/2019 13:59

You can miss the trip without a sick note... just call in sick. You can self-certify for 7 days.

Definitely call your GP surgery again and ask for an urgent appointment for the bloods though. Hope you feel better Flowers

Heyha · 20/01/2019 14:10

I feel for you having a shitty boss. But put it this way, even if you do get the GP appointment tomorrow you aren't magically going to feel better straight away and I wouldn't be travelling if I were actually fainting, is it worth the risk? Feeling dizzy is one thing but clearly you've got something going on that probably only needs a simple fix but that will take a few days to put in place. As a PP says you can self cert, and pregnancy illness can't count on attendance procedures if that's something you've been threatened with.

Bin the trip, try to get in to GP but if not go back to maternity and see if they can get bloods done at hospital (ours has a take a ticket and wait system so you just need to get paperwork from someone, anyone, it's brilliant). I wouldn't go into work though either, have a few days to rest and get plenty of good nutrition and fluid into yourself while they figure out what needs tweaking to get you back on your feet Flowers

Angelmiracle · 20/01/2019 14:27

I made my appointment with my community midwife who done my bloods - she is based in GP surgery one day per week and I got an appointment that same morning. I didn't go through GP or the surgery nurse. Do you have a community midwife phone number?

MaverickSnoopy · 20/01/2019 14:37

Yes my midwife did bloods too. I really wouldn't be travelling if feeling like this. Hope you feel better soon.

bellainthemiddle · 20/01/2019 18:24

Thanks so much for the advice. I've decided to miss the trip - it's going to be a bit of a pain to sort the logistics, but I think it's the better decision because I wasn't really feeling comfortable about going. Unfortunately I do have to get a sick note because that's the policy with this particular work event - but I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that it is going to work out OK!
