Ectopic scare - terrified

Hi guys,

I've just joined today because I am absolutely terrified and so early in my pregnancy that I haven't really told anyone.

I'm about 4/5 weeks pregnant - only found out on the 5th Jan! This morning I woke up and had pink discharge type stuff when I went to the loo. I've had pain in the left side of my abdomen and cramping the past few days but I have colitis and this is pretty normal for me so I ignored it until today.

I've been to the Dr and after prodding my tummy she told me the pregnancy might be ectopic and send me up to the hospital for bloods. At the hospital they really struggled to draw blood but have done in the end.

I'm completely freaking out now and have had a massive panic attack which I know won't help matters :(

Husbands at work and I'm now at work (I work on my own so have no one to talk to or confide in here). My best friend is the only other person who knows and she's of in NZ atm.

I figured you guys might be able to help me deal with this a bit - I know nothing can be done if it is and it's just a case of waiting now but my God I feel like the rugs been pulled from under me and can't stop crying.

Anybody else been through this?

Take a deep breath and try not to panic. It's more likely than not that you are fine. It's very very common to have spotting and/or pain in early pregnancy. I ended up in A&E twice at around 5 weeks due to unbearable cramping and some spotting. Had 2 scans and it turned out to just be implantation. Some women feel it more than others. I'm now 31 weeks and going strong. I understand your fear because I also had a miscarriage before this pregnancy so know what it's like for it not to work out.

You're very early, and if it does turn out to be ectopic, you will have caught it early enough for it not to have done any substantial damage to your tubes. You're doing the right thing in getting checked over, but ectopic is pretty rare while pain and spotting is common. It's honestly more likely to be fine than not.

Also, if you have an EPU that does walk in appointments, see if you can get a scan. It may be too early to see anything at this stage but they can often rule out ectopic before they can make any conclusions on viability.
