Small sac , correct size baby

Hi - I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and went for an early scan . The doctor said the prognosis does not look good for one baby as the sac size is 21mm and the baby is 18mm so not much smaller . This is actually a triplet pregnancy and the other two are a similar size (19mm) but the sacs are double the size roughly at 37mm. It’s obvious from the scan pics that this one has a much smaller sac . Has anyone had this and the sac has grown , I have sort of prepared myself for the worst .

Sorry to hear. I have not had the same but my first scan showed twins. One much smaller than the other with a weaker hear beat. At the next scan the second twin had no heart beat.

I was reassured that it would have no impact on the remaining twin and it means my pregnancy will be lower risk.

Alicarmen · 13/01/2019 19:25

Thanks jacks , sorry to hear that but I am
glad it’s continuing well for you .This is what I think will happen to me next time I go for a scan . He said my prognosis will be better with 2 than 3 anyhow but it’s still hard to hear isn’t it ? This little one had a fast heart beat as well compared to the other 2 so the doctor said he/she may also be distressed . I will just have to wait and see I guess .

It tricky because the triplets are a scary prospect and a twin pregnancy would be lower risk but no one want to loose a baby. No outcome is ideal. But whatever happens will happen and you can’t do anything to change it.

Alicarmen · 13/01/2019 19:32

I agree you said it exactly how i felt . When I first heard I was almost relieved (this sounds awful ) as I knew It would be taken out my hands and I am aware of the risks of a triplet pregnancy . However you are so right no one wants to lose a baby . I have another scan tomorrow so will she if he/she is still
hanging in there or not

No experience @Alicarmen but wish you well
For your scan tomorrow xThanks

Alicarmen · 13/01/2019 19:39

Aw thank you tobeornottobe . I will update . Having seen the three together I know there is something different with this one and the prognosis is not favourable so like I said I have prepared for the worst but you never know .

Hi, at my 9 week scan one of my twins measured 20mm with a sac of just 22mm. They actually recorded in my notes "gestational sac absent". I was told you can only wait and see and was fully prepared to lose my baby as everything I read was so negative and I couldn't find anyone who had a positive outcome. However, my 12 week scan showed both babies still there and the sac had grown. It's good to be prepared for the worst but don't give up hope completely. I hope you too have a positive outcome Thanks

My first pregnancy (a singleton), the sac for my son was much smaller than it was supposed to be. I googled a lot and assumed the worst, but he is 8 now.

Of course it can be a sign of something negative going on, especially combined with it being a multiple births pregnancy, but it isn’t 100% yet. Good luck.

Alicarmen · 13/01/2019 20:49

Thank you catchygem and GenericHamster for this x it’s encouraging . You are right , everything on the internet on this topic is so negative . This has given me a little bit of hope ! Maybe the sac has caught up a little bit . Thank you for sharing xx

Just looked up my posts on the fertility forum I was on and my sac was 9mm at 6w3d (should’ve been 14ish) and 15-18mm at 7w3d when it should’ve been more like 27mm. Annoyingly I didn’t write down details of the fetus size but I remember thinking it didn’t seem like there was much wiggle room.

barkinatthemoon · 13/01/2019 21:02

Just wanted to say good luck with everything! I don't have any experience with multiple pregnancies, but had an early scan due to bleeding with my last pregnancy which showed no heartbeat, only a fetal pole and a "smaller than it should be" sac for the gestation, the sonographer said it didn't look too promising as for our dates, he'd "expect to see alot more and a bigger sac". We were told to go back in 2 weeks. We couldn't wait that long and booked a private scan for a few days later, and by this point there was a strong heart beat, and the sac was now a normal size, so it shows how much things can change is a short space of time! She's now 22 months and perfectly healthy. I was convinced we'd lost her and prepared for the worst. Not trying to give you any sort of false hope, just showing that it can turn out okay. Good luck x

Alicarmen · 13/01/2019 21:04

Thank you that is really helpful . I remember thinking the same. That compared to the other two that one has very little room. Have attached pictures so you can see the difference . T2 is the little sac x

I had an early scan at 7-8 weeks which showed twins. Twin 2 was in a much smaller sac than twin 1 and I was told to come back for a follow up scan and warned that twin 2 may have no heartbeat.

My follow up 2 weeks later showed 2 even sized sacs and good growth of both babies.

I'm now 29 weeks and both babies are growing well.

I read somewhere that early scans can sometimes be misleading as it can be difficult to ascertain the position of the feutus meaning a slight change in position would result in a different view.

That said, vanishing twins are pretty common but do not generally have an impact on the remaining pregnancies.

Good luck

How did it go OP? I'm currently pregnant with my little miracle baby after a few losses so I know how awful the limbo is of not knowing and how you cling to any stories with happy endings. Thinking of you 💐

Strugglingonagain · 14/01/2019 17:41

How was the scan OP?

Jackshouse · 14/01/2019 19:43

Alicarmen I have been thinking of you today. Sending positive thoughts.

Alicarmen · 14/01/2019 20:22

Ladies, thanks so much for asking x positive news so far , he/she is still hanging in there . The sac and baby have both grown a little and although this one’s sac looks tiny compared to the other two the baby is the right size and the obs said this is encouraging. Due back in a week so i guess it’s just a waiting game . I would Iove this little one to be ok , I have always thought of them as a little threesome . Thanks for all your positive stories and thoughts .
