Do I continue to take Cyclizine?

I suffered severe morning sickness where I was vomiting morning through until night and was hospitalised and afterwards put on cyclizine. It works and stops me being sick.
I turned 12 weeks last week so have tried to wean myself off it just to see if the sickness has stopped - it's nowhere near the scale it was but I'm still sick a couple of times a day. Can I justify taking cyclizine now it's feels less severe and HG like, and is just a couple of times a day? Obviously it's a lot nicer to not throw up.. but baby comes first

Anyone have any idea? I've just taken some as I threw up half an hour ago and have a nice meal planned for tonight I want to not throw up. I realise that's probably not a good reason is it. Maybe I'm answering my own question Blush

I plan to take my promethazine for as long as I feel even remotely nauseous or sick. My theory is I've been on it for the mostpart of my pregnancy, continuing it a few more weeks is no biggie (especially if it keeps me sane).
Im scared to come off mine in case I'm badly sick again. I can cope on the medication and only being sick once or twice. I will not be coming off it unless my doctor refuses to continue prescribing!
If I were you, I would continue taking it.

Continue taking it. If you have tried to stop and have been sick you really do still need it.

the 12 weeks isnt a magic stop date for nausea/sickness, no matter what gps and others say. My nausea got worse at 12w so I asked for meds which I stopped at 16w cos it wasnt so bad then (and doc gave me 30 tablets) and now I dont feel sick anymore at 18w. i would say continue taking them if they work.

Cyclizine is safe. Take it as long as you need to (all the way through pregnancy for me).

Teddyreddy · 12/01/2019 18:20

There's been a lot of research looking at women who've taken cyclizine in pregnancy - and none of it has found any negative impact on the baby. Does the nausea make it more difficult for you to eat healthy food or drink enough fluids - even mild dehydration is not good for the baby?

My first pregnancy, I probably wouldn't have taken it but with DC3 I definitely would given it's safe. Part of the reason would be because there's an awful lot of pregnancy left to go , and a lot of the later pregnancy aches and pains there is very little you can do about, particularly because painkillers stronger than paracetamol are off limits - but this particular problem you don't have to suffer through. The other reason I'd take it, which is less relevant to you, is nausea and vomiting make me a rubbish parent to DC1 and DC2 and I have to think of them too.

You have to do what feels right to you though.

I was given Cyclizine as well and I only ever took it when my sickness was bad - most days between weeks 8-12 I was taking it 3 times a day. I found I was naturally taking it less i.e. not feeling so sick in the mornings so didn't take a tablet. If I feel awful I will take one as I think they are a god send and now I'm 17 weeks I probably take 1 every 2/3 days. I am still sick almost every other day but nowhere near as bad as I was!

gossipgirl28 · 12/01/2019 21:08

Cyclizine saved me during the first trimester! I took 3 a day and only just managed to get through each day.
I started weaning myself off to 2 a day about 13-14 weeks and went down to 1 on week 16.
Only just stopped altogether last week which was week 17.
I'm still randomly sick and nauseous sometimes but it's no where near as bad at all as the first trimester.
Xoxo

Cyclising is dreadful! I've tried them all and the only one that worked for my Hyperemesis was Ondansetron. They don't like prescribing it though, as it's expensive for the NHS to buy x

Chocolate45 · 13/01/2019 18:38

Take it for as long as you need. I was on 3 tabs a day every day up until around 13 weeks. I now just take a tablet as and when. For the past 2 weeks I haven’t needed any.

Justus22 · 13/01/2019 19:53

If it works for you I'd take it, it's not dangerous and my go said its been used for 11 years so they are happy it's safe. Unfortunately it didn't work for me at all so I stopped it, I've had horrendous sickness which I thought subsided at 12 weeks and then came back with a vengeance but the last week Ive been much better, today a bit rubbish again though 😩 I'm approaching 16 weeks so hoping that is the time I get rid of it for good, has been in last 2 pregnancies so fingers crossed. I have 3 others to take care of and its been very tough. I have hated it for the fact I usually cook very healthy dinners and where I've tried I've not been able to maintain my own standards with cooking, cleaning, days out etc since mid November-hell for me but Im looking forward to getting some normality back. I don't think the kids have noticed too much bless them but I hate being so weak and feeling ill all the time, it has made me appreciate my general health and lifestyle so much more. Don't suffer if you don't need to anyway, you are better taking it and being able to eat and relax than being sick unnecessarily. My doctor said to me only take what you need but he also said you need to be eating and well for baby too. Xxx
