There's no "best" formula. Legally they are all required to meet certain standards. Some milks will suit some babies more than others. Pick one you can get hold of easily and see how you go from there.

If you really want to give your baby the best milk, please consider giving breastfeeding a go as this supplies antibodies and all the vital nutrients your baby needs. Apologies if there's medical reasons why you're unable to do this.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 09/01/2019 23:18

All the milks are pretty much the same. Go for one you can get local to you without much fuss!

Please do consider breastfeeding though - it is by far the best milk for newborns.

BakewellGin1 · 09/01/2019 23:23

Was unwell after previous delivery so struggled and want to be prepared this time. Last baby was bottle fed and C&G milk didnt agree with him so was curious if any where better then others.

Please consider breastfeeding.
Good luck!

First steps nutrition trust gives an evidence based breakdown of all the formula milks.

I’d see what’s readily available in your local supermarket and go with that brand. With regards to how much it depends on how long you’re going to be in hospital (which can’t be planned for I know) and whether someone can bring any in if you were to run out. I’d say a box of the premade newborn bottles would be enough for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

PBobs · 10/01/2019 00:03

I would second the premade presterilised newborn Aptamil or the like. I'm going to get hold of a box or two of them to take to hospital in case I need them for some reason.

YouBoggleMyMind · 10/01/2019 00:07

Another one for Aptamil if you're not going to BF. Can find them easily in Tesco baby aisle.

MarthasGinYard · 10/01/2019 00:08

We FF from birth

Aptamil

Amazing stuff

MarthasGinYard · 10/01/2019 00:09

I used cartons for about 3 weeks as I was too nervous to use the powder.

Once we got into sync and used to it all was fine.

missnevermind · 10/01/2019 00:12

I breastfed all mine. But always had a box of aptamil in the cupboard ready. I love the look of the little boxes of ready made bottles they have now.

Ambs81 · 10/01/2019 00:13

I didn't bring any formula to hospital, or have any in the house, or any pumps etc...easier to throw the towel in with breastfeeding if you have a plan b within arms reach.
A newborn cannot digest any formula, by any brand. Formula is made from dried cows breast milk - so unless you're giving birth to a calf, they will struggle to digest it.
Colostrum is what humans babies need in their first days of life.

nos123 · 10/01/2019 00:18

I’m not sure why pp seem insistent on suggesting breast milk when op’s question has nothing to do with it. She has her reasons to want to prepare by bringing formula.

I found Aptimil to be the best, Op. You can get packs of pre-made off Amazon with sterilised bottle tops or in packs of 4 in most supermarkets.

CelticPromise · 10/01/2019 00:20

First steps nutrition has the only unbiased info.

MarthasGinYard · 10/01/2019 00:20

Op asked what milk to 'take in' to hospital with her.

nos123 · 10/01/2019 00:20

*aptamil

Ambs81 · 10/01/2019 00:22

Original question;

Advised that I need to take milk into hospital...
Which is best in your opinion ?

Answer;
The best in my opinion, and in the opinion of world heath organisation, is (human) breastmilk

UntilTheVeryEnd · 10/01/2019 00:41

Hi OP! I really recommend the carton of ready made milks as PP have suggested. I took in powder and bottles and what a huge and ginormous faff it was. You can order small bottles of SMA with screw on individual teats that are pre sterile so it’s a case of open, twist on and away you go! I will be doing this for DC3 due in April. Not sure if other brands do the mini bottle with teats but worth looking on amazon.

MiniMum97 · 10/01/2019 01:04

I used Aptamil but that was many moons ago. I did some research into what the different milks contained and that seemed to be best at the time as it contained long chain fatty acids and the others didn't. That may well have changed though.

The comments from the breast feeding crew is very annoying. If she wants to breast feed I am sure the OP will. She was obviously asking about formula. Stop being deliberately obtuse.

NewYoiker · 10/01/2019 02:35

Well considering that OP was so unwell with her last birth she couldn't breast feed. It's understandable she wants to be prepared for the chance it might happen again this time. Some hospitals do ask you to bring in formula as they only have a finite amount in the kitchen on the ward.

I could tell you what brand the hospital I used to work for use but we only used it because it was the cheapest. W

Aptamil seems to be very popular though :)

RogueV · 10/01/2019 06:52

I aim to breastfeed however have bought a Hipp Organice ready made pack with tears just in case.

RLOU30 · 10/01/2019 06:58

OP is asking what milk to bring in as she was advised to do so in case she is too unwell! I’m sure she knows breast is best and doesn’t live under a rock! Honestly.

welshweasel · 10/01/2019 07:16

The premise made bottles with disposable teats are great for this - I’ve got some aptamil ones. If we carry on with formula I’ll use Aldi mamia as its the same as aptamil but half the price! Hoping BF works out better for me this time though.

brokenhead · 10/01/2019 07:25

I had aptamil in my bag
He went to scbu and they tube fed him aptamil they had their own of that and cow and gate I believe

I didn't get on with that formula and ended up using nanny care but the thing is that's not pre made so I don't know what to bring in this time for in case if I don't breast feed

Probably hipp organic x
