Whooping Cough

Name changed for this one as identifiable.
Looking for some help, my sister is 24 weeks pregnant. She has had her whooping cough vaccination but has a child in her class (she is a teacher) with Whooping Cough. She can't get any advice from her GP or 111 who advise she calls the midwife and the midwife isn't answering.
Is she safe to be teaching this child or in the school whilst there is whooping cough in it?
Thanks :)

When did she get the jab?

I think it takes 6 weeks for immunity to pass to the baby.

I found out that my friend had it on her hen do! I’d spent a lot of time close to her but both me and baby were fine.

I imagine she’ll be ok as she’s had the vaccine, but I’m surprised the child is in school!

The vaccination is to protect the baby when it's born. So she's fine to teach the child.

There's no risk to pregnant woman or the baby in the womb but it can make newborn babies very sick which is why they vaccinate in pregnancy so the newborn is protected.

Hi, I had my whooping cough jab and then went to see my parents who were both diagnosed with whooping cough days later.

The midwifes told me that I was protected by the jabs I had when I was younger and the jab I'd just had was to protect the baby from when she's born to when she has her own jabs.

They told me not to worry as it would be fine and touch wood it has been - this was back in October

Assuming your sister either had whooping cough when she was younger or has developed immunity from a childhood vaccination then she will be okay. It's worth pointing out that not all vaccines will give someone immunity but do in most cases. The vaccination now is for the baby to protect it in the first 6-8 weeks until it gets it's own vaccination.

Thanks everyone, that's helpful. I'll pass it on
