Reoccurring thrush during pregnancy!!?

Hi Ladies,

Haven't had thrush in years.... But around 28 weeks pregnant I had to contact the midwife to use a pessary and cream which she said was fine to use....

But I am now 31 weeks and for the last couple of days have been developing the symptoms again... My midwife said I can use another pessary if need be but has anyone else had it more than once during pregnancy? I feel like there must be something wrong with me as my other friends who have been pregnant have never had it.... 😢

Probably just looking into it too much, as usual overthink everything 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Plus my midwife said if I get again then they have to swab me or something!? 🤔

Thanks in advance! X

Not suffered with this pregnant but try taking some probiotics as gut health can have an impact on yeast and cause thrush. Hope it gets better!

Dobinette · 09/01/2019 15:28

Yes! Grrr. It's the only time I got it. Only thing that gets rid of it for me is the pessary (don't use the applicator to insert though).

Kept coming back but it did go after baby was born. So irritating in the meantime!

Might be worth your partner getting treated with the pill treatment, to avoid passing it back and forth.

Thanks for the tips ladies, just so annoying makes me feel like I'm not clean or something 😩🤦🏻‍♀️

@dobinette I've used the pessary once before and inserted it with my finger as I did read it could irritate the cervix... But did your midwife do anything other than advise you use the cream and pessary!?

I'd just feel so embarrassed going into labour with it down there 😬 But again I'm being silly as I'll have bigger things to be worrying about 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes I had it pretty much constantly when pg last time from about 15 weeks. Had to have a fair few pessaries prescribed by gp. I was told only to use cream and pessary, not to have the oral tablet, but obv your dh can take the tablet.

Dobinette · 09/01/2019 21:29

Just told to use the cream and pessary.

I've heard that certain foods can encourage thrush too. Dr Google could give more info on that thoughSmile

wingingitmills · 09/01/2019 21:37

I've had thrush through most of my pregnancy and I've never had it before this. It's been horrendous and I've had so many courses of pessaries and creams it's unreal - unfortunately it hasn't helped much if at all. I had the same mindset as you but I doubt during birth I'll be thinking much about what they think about the state of my vagina 😂

YoloTF · 09/01/2019 21:55

I had it every other week when pregnant. Was truly horrendous. I forgot what it felt like to be normal. I was so so swollen down there, It only went straight after birth Shock

Patienceisvirtuous · 09/01/2019 21:56

Are you thirsty too? If so worth a check for gestational diabetes.

I had recurrent thrush and gd was the cause...

EggbertHeartsTina · 09/01/2019 22:05

I am quite prone to it anyway but currently 23 weeks pg and have pretty much had it none stop. Am now taking probiotics. I’m sure if I changed my diet (I.e. less sugar) it might help but I don’t want to.

Waterlemon · 09/01/2019 22:16

I did have a really bad case whilst pregnant and GP tested me for diabetes.

Then a good few years later, I got bad thrush again which ended up recurring the week before my period every month for well over year or so. Grrr!

I find pessarys work better than the oral treatment for me, but I usually need to take more than one dose. I also bathe in bicarbonate of soda and salt.

However, i highly recommend multi-gyn actigel . I use it daily when thrush is active (although it can sometimes sting like hell) then every other day, then twice a week, then once a week. Once the symptoms have gone, I only use it during the week before my period. It has been a real life changer for me after suffering for so long! I buy the BV version. There is a thrush version but it comes in 5 single doses whereas the other one comes in a single tube that does about 20 doses. I insert it using a medicine syringe. Usually 2.5ml is enough, anymore is too messy. I buy multipacks of it from amazon, but most larger chemists sell it.

Reastie · 10/01/2019 17:31

This is interesting about the sugar actually as last pg I had it constantly and by this point where I am now I had had it at least 3 times. So far (touch wood) not had it. Last time I ate loads of sugary foods and this time I’m not, I wonder if that’s the reason.

SunshineAndRainbows6 · 11/01/2019 06:52

Thanks for all your advice and help ladies! I'm glad to not be the only one whose suffered during pregnancy 🤰🏻 I've been tested twice now for GD as I have a higher BMI so they do the test twice as a precaution anyway... Both tests have come back low 👍🏻

I'm currently using the cream in the morning before work and of a night to see if that helps before using another pessary as at the moment it doesn't feel nowhere near as bad as last time... so maybe I've caught it early enough 🤔 We shall see how the weekend goes!!

Thanks again 😘

Yes I did and he was the easiest delivery out the three he did however have skin issues which may or may not be related 🤷‍♀️

Redken24 · 11/01/2019 07:05

What's your diet like? I can't drink full sugar drinks etc, too much fruit etc as it always causes thrush.

Teddyreddy · 11/01/2019 07:48

Even when not pregnant, I find thrush comes back if I used the pessary plus cream - but not with the tablets. With DC1 I struggled to get rid of it. With DC2 I got a GP who listened and instead prescribed me a pack of 3 pessaries, which you take 3 days in a row (came in a single box, no cream required). It worked, it properly cleared it up - so if you do struggle it might be worth asking about other treatment options.

SunshineAndRainbows6 · 11/01/2019 11:06

Yeah I may see my GP if it comes back after this try 😊 Thank you!!!

@Redken24 My diets not brilliant but it's not too bad... I've only put on about half a stone so the midwives are really pleased with me! I haven't really craved anything as such, so haven't been eating more fruit or sugary drinks then normal.... 🤔

((((TMI)))) Before I could easily tell it was thrush due to the consistency and redness and swelling.... This time though I just have really watery discharge with white flecks in and I'm a little sore but only when I wipe 🤔

I had thrush from about 8 weeks up until my baby was born. I’m a very healthy, very active person who eats pretty well. Tried everything (creams, pressaries, natural yoghurt, cutting out sugar!) but it always came back. Had loads of swabs so it was definitely thrush despite causing an abnormal green-tinged discharge. GP eventually said it would go away on its own once I had a baby and it did to be fair.

Didiusfalco · 11/01/2019 11:11

Yes, it was awful so sympathies. I also got tested for diabetes - which I didn’t have. But I saw a gynaecologist at the hospital who prescribed a course of 7 pessaries. That did the trick for the rest of the pregnancy. Would highly recommend, I don’t think a gp would have done that and I think the prescription had to be ordered in so not that common.
