Nausea every day when needing a poo

I feel so dignified posting this!

So every single day about half an hour before I need to go for a BM I get intense nausea. I’m already on medication for bad nausea issues and have really struggled with nausea but this is twisting me over the edge. So I do constantly have nausea but this makes it crazy bad. I do take laxitives as I’m on ondansetron which causes constipation.

I go pretty much every day, I wouldn’t say I’m constipated yet every single day I feel dire for half an hour before I go. So I know I’ll need the loo before I actually can manage to go! And once I need to go it’s a desperate urge. Afterwards it usually improves the symptoms.

I’ve been pretty much housebound with the nausea and I’m worried about it happening when I’m out and may not be near a loo! Now 16 weeks and has been happening pretty much the whole time.

Does anyone else get this weird symptom?

I presume there’s nothing I can do to stop it

Hi OP. Didn’t want to read and run. I can’t say that I’ve experienced this during pregnancy, but I do have IBS and when I have a ‘flare up’ before I’ve had diarrhoea I do sometimes get very very nauseous. Nearly been sick sometimes. My GP told me that when your digestive system goes into overdrive because it’s all connected it can upset your stomach and make you feel very sick, which might explain why you need the toilet quickly after the nausea because your digestive system is going a bit berserk!

I have Crohn's disease, I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant too and BM movements have been much much less when I do need to go I get terrible pains and nausea to the point the pain takes my breath away!
I have this mildly anyway but it's much worse since being pregnant..
I'm not on any medication..
If u think the medication is causing it can u not see how u go with out it, hoping the nausea has improved now you r in the 2nd trimester?

Thanks for th rmessages. I have IBS too and get this very mildly sometimes when pg but not often.

Bigonesmallone I don’t think the medication is causing it and I’m still suffering with nausea enough to need them, I wondered if the laxitive could cause it (which I take because of the anti nausea medication).

Urgh, it’s horrible and I can’t go sooner than I can go despite the nause and knowing I soon will. I wonder if there’s anything I can do.

It’s got wors this week as I’m having more BM due to finally being able to eat more fruit and veg so an increase in fibre in my diet. I was so happy I could eat more fibre but it’s making things worse in this situ.

It will definitely be the laxatives.. Personally I would try coming off the anti-nausea medication (in turn means u won't need the laxatives) and speak to ur doctor about an alternative..
Obviously it depends on how bad ur symptoms r..

Thing is though symptoms are really bad. Bad enough to be housebound. I don’t think I could cope without the ondansetron and even if I lower the dose of ondansetron I’d stil have constipation issues as even when I was on a half dose it was a big issue until I started laxitives. Maybe now I’m eating from fruit and veg and things aren’t as hard to get things moving as before I shoukd try lowering my dose of the laxitives and see if they still have enough effect to work but cause less nausea, although the laxitives I take are just stool softeners. I’ll mention it to the mw when I see her later this week.

Btw I have tried different drugs and combinations but the ondansetron truly is the only thing that makes a real difference to helping me, it’s not that I’m against trying other options but I’ve tried them all!

Have you considered trying those peppermint oil IBS capsules? Peppermint essential oil is considered not safe to take internally during pregnancy, but actually any essential oil is not safe to take internally for living creatures. The peppermint oil capsules should be peppermint food oil, which is a different thing.

I think that peppermint oil is supposed to relax your digestive system, so it might provide some symptomatic relief... If a spearmint oil version was made, that might help, too (instead of, not as well as - it’s the milder version, and considered better for children). Alternatively, peppermint tea, spearmint tea, or spearmint and chamomile tea (the latter being the best-tasting, in my opinion) might have the same sort of effect. However, I don’t think that I could manage two cups of any of those (could probably manage one of one of them), and my nausea has reduced to manageable levels - in your situation, I, personally, wouldn’t want to touch any of the teas!

If you want to try, you’ll probably want to google a bit more in-depth than I managed - I couldn’t get a single food oil safety result.

I hope that you do manage to improve things somewhat. I was delighted to hear that you’d managed a salad, though - for me, when a green thing was possible to eat, it marked the beginning of things being less horrendous.

Reastie · 08/01/2019 19:11

Spargle I can’t swallow tablets so can’t manage peppermint capsules but I have been drinking a lot of peppermint tea (maybe 3-4 mugs a day on a good day) but it’s made no difference. Thank you for the comment about salad. I was so excited when I could manage it again, I think dh thought I was crazy! Hopefully over the coming weeks things will continue to improve to a point I can go out and do things again.

Didn’t want to read and run but I have suffered pretty badly with constipation throughout my pregnancy now 31 weeks! The last 3 weeks I’ve been able to go regularly (thank god!) but today I had the most awful nausea just seconds before needing to use the loo and it was really nasty throughout to the point where I didn’t know whether to get off and grab the bin incase! I have no idea what it is but I haven’t got IBS or anything so I’m lost
