5 weeks, constant pain left side womb??

For about a week I have had a pain which seems to be getting worse, left side of womb and also lower back ache, like bad period cramps. It's like a constant dull ache but painful enough to make me wince/hard to sleep.

I don't remember this with any of my previous pregnancies. Has anyone any experience of this? I'm worried it might be an ectopic pregnancy.

Honestly, I would go straight to the hospital, not meaning to frighten you, but you may have an ectopic pregnancy, please go get it checked out, ive just gone through this with a friend some months ago.
Dont wait go to the hospital, before any damage gets done, if it is ectopic, it could rupture.
Best wishes.

hipstercat · 07/01/2019 23:23

It can be perfectly normal, so don't freak out. I had the same (and did freak out), also at 5 weeks although probably a bit milder than yours, and all was fine. But there is a chance it's ectopic, and better safe than sorry with those things, so do get yourself to the hospital!

foxbox99 · 07/01/2019 23:27

Oh dear. Feels a bit dramatic going in the middle of the night, I'm not bleeding either - do you think it would be better to go in the morning?

Ring your early pregnancy unit
I’d get it checked out tonight personally

foxbox99 · 07/01/2019 23:36

Early pregnancy unit? Is that in all hospitals. Closest proper hospital to me is an hour and a half away 😭

Ah. In that case I would ring 111 for advice.

explodingkitten · 07/01/2019 23:44

I had an ectopic two years ago. We found out at 8 weeks and I didn't have any lasting damage. Are you sure you are 5 weeks? You could ring 111 for advice.

explodingkitten · 07/01/2019 23:46

My pregnancy begore my ectopic I was crying of pain at 5 weeks. Never did find out why. Scan showed nothing special. It hurt as much as the miscarriage at 11.4 weeks.

It doesn't have to be anything sinister. Pregnancies are weird. You should get it checked out but try not to worry too much.

elasticfantastic · 07/01/2019 23:51

I've had 2 ectopics, the first ruptured and I was only 4 weeks . Your symptoms do sound like what I had. I also felt very tender in my abdominal area and like I had indigestion or trapped wind. Eventually I had shoulder tip pain which felt like someone was ripping my arm off! That's when I realised it was a ruptured ectopic as that's a symptom of internal bleeding. I lost the tube. A few years later I had another ectopic in my one remaining tube.

My point is. Please get it checked ASAP . Hopefully it's nothing but better safe than sorry x

MontyPants · 07/01/2019 23:56

I had pains like what you’re describing throughout my pregnancy, and now have a perfectly healthy 13 month old. Try not to worry yourself too much, but it’s always best to get advice from midwife. Do you have a 24/7 midwife phone service in your area? They were great whenever I had random concerns in the middle of the night.

Sorry to hear you're in this situation, OP. I had an ectopic in June - same symptoms as you describe plus v light and brownish bleeding and a bit of a burning sensation in my right shoulder blade. I was also 5 weeks. Went to my local EPU, they confirmed it was ectopic with a scan. Measured hCG and advised we do 'expectant management', basically see if it miscarries on its own. It did, so there was no need to operate on my tube. So they don't necessarily alwaya burst.

I then had a big panic in October - same pain as you describe and no other symptoms. Took myself to A&E given previous history. It turned out to be fine and just a sort corpus luteum (the perfectly normal and good cyst sustaining the pregnancy while the placenta develops). If you know which side you ovulated from, the corpus luteum will be on the same side as that.

In short, not necessarily bad news, and if it's bad news it's not necessarily the worst outcome straight away. But do go and get yourself checked out and if you feel any sharp pain, tummy tenderness or have a significant bleed I'd go to hospital/call an ambulance immediately. When these things burst they start talking about risk to life.

Really hope it's not serious for you. Even if it'snothing, the doctors will be nice about it.

Thanks everyone, kids are at school and I'm on my way to hospital now. Found it hard to sleep last night! Getting really bad lower back pain now, it's just constant and doesn't go away, I'm sure something isn't right. Just hope they don't send me away without doing a scan, I've heard stories of some shoddy medical care regarding ectopic pregnancies!

The reason they don't always scan is if it's very early in the pregnancy. If you are only 5 weeks pregnant it would be extremely unlikely to show on a scan whether ectopic or not. At that stage they will monitor you and keep checking your hormone levels every day. You don't necessarily have to stay in hospital for this.

Gobletoffire · 08/01/2019 14:34

Keep us updated OP, I hope everything is ok. I’ve had pains on one side (my left) through most of this pregnancy, a bit like period cramps which come and go. I’m 30 weeks now and everything normal. It isn’t always something to worry about but you’re definitely doing the right thing by getting checked.

foxbox99 · 08/01/2019 15:27

Hi everyone. They took blood test to monitor hcg which came back as 4000 which is within normal range apparently, I have to come back for a scan tomorrow. They have said if pain gets worse to call them .b

Sounds promising, good luck! Fx they find it and in the right place. Also don't panic if they don't first time, I had to wait two days because the dot was too tiny to confirm it as a pregnancy at first.

foxbox99 · 09/01/2019 14:17

Thanks stargazy, everything is as it should be!! They showed me the little yolk sac and said no cysts on ovaries. Feel a bit guilty for wasting resources now and I lost a whole days work yesterday - doh! At least I have peace of mind now x

Ducksandacorns · 09/01/2019 14:24

Hi @foxbox99 did they give you any measurements? I had an EPU scan on Monday too with the same pains as you describe!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 09/01/2019 17:32

Oh lovely news! I’m so glad for you. Not wasted resources at all. You had the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy - you are just lucky it wasn’t it.

elasticfantastic · 09/01/2019 18:26

Definitely not wasted resources, you did the right thing getting checked. Excellent news! Congratulations!

hipstercat · 09/01/2019 20:52

Glad to hear it! Going to hospital because you're in pain is NOT wasting resources - that's what it's there for!

StargazyDrifter · 09/01/2019 22:20

foxbox99 wonderful! And definitely not a waste, your overall wellbeing at this stage is a huge deal. Plus you had symptoms that could have easily been something bad. Go you and the yolk!
