So I know this may sound like a really stupid question I'm 33 weeks with my 3rd I suffer quite bad with ibs however I've managed to avoid any consTipton throughout this pregnancy until today. Sorry if this is tmi but I've just been to the toilet for a no 2...and I just could not go for the life of me like it just rimmed slightly. Then I couldon't get off the toilet because I had the urge to push but it just wasn't budging so I think I've spent about 20 mind on toilet and eventually used everything of me to push it out. I had no choice I couldn't move and nothing like I normally do was helping to shift it. Stupid question is can I harm baby by doing this as I'm so close to the end???

No, but you can give yourself issues, so if it is becoming an issue get some help. I was on half to a whole sachet of Movicol every day I was pregnant (3 times! ) I am convinced it is why I didn't end up with piles!

I did suffer similar issue to what you describe just after birth mind you, just the first 3 weeks. My midwife suggested going back in half sachets of Movicol until my bowel was rested from the whole birth ordeal!

Basically you won't hurt baby, but could strain something in yourself, so take care and there are lots of things that can help. Don't wait until it gets really bad.

P.s. for things 'stuck' really low down the best hing is a glucose suppository. You can buy them off the shelf in boots. Not pleasant but nearly always effective, especially for low down blockages.

Hi OP

Really feel for you I’ve just been through this too! I second everything the PP has said the suppositories are worth it, I had to use two (one each night) but they really worked and made it softer. Also I know everyone says this and you probably are aware but upping your water intake is one of the best things you can do - I constantly had a decent water bottle in my hands and every time I went into the kitchen I just downed another glass. Again this helped and I didn’t need to strain or push, it doesn’t harm the baby but it certainly doesn’t help you and you may end up with piles in the future.

A nice warm bath can also relax your muscles down there - making it easier to pass, I live in the bath when I’m constipated (at not at work!). I’d take a look into your diet and look at things with fibre in (but not too much as that will make you constipated too!) dried fruits are good, along with apples, ripe bananas and porridge.
