I appreciate this is a first world problem but don't want to ask this elsewhere as not a lot of people know I'm pregnant. But, I have booked my mum and I a suprise spa day for her birthday and one of the treatments included is a hot stone back massage, I will be 9 weeks pregnant, will they still do it? Thanks

Unlikely I'm afraid

Looks like it’s fine in early pregnancy :) if you’re unsure you still want to have that particular treatment could you ask the spa to change it?

le42 · 06/01/2019 17:04

I think technically they advise you not to have treatments in first trimester and the spa might not be comfortable doing this for you. Might be better to swop it to a facial?

I’ve been to spas whilst pregnant and with friends who were pregnant and they’ve always offered a pregnancy massage as an alternative treatment. I would get in touch with the spa and ask what your options are as I’ve always found them accommodating.

You shouldn't use a jacuzzi/hot tub or sauna, steam room etc. You should also tell the spa you are pregnant. They will either change the treatment or avoid certain areas during it.

mortifiedmama · 06/01/2019 17:36

If you tell them, it's unlikely they'll do it. Chances of it causing a miscarriage are virtually nil, but the spa won't want the association.

It's the same with the jacuzzi, sauna steam room. They won't cause miscarriage but could cause you to faint as you are more at risk of overheating. You also might always wonder if you were to have a miscarriagenif going to the spa caused it (personally I wouldn't but I'm very practical and very aware of what does and doesn't cause miscarriage!). If you might doubt yourself, don't do it.

I know to not go into a Jacuzzi or sauna while pregnant. If I do unfortunately miscarriage I won't blame it on the spa. I'm sensible person and this isn't my first pregnancy.

coneywonder you see if just go and do it all and wouldn't tell them I was pregnant either, but it's your call. Do they do any pregnancy treatments? They may refuse to do any as you're in the first trimester.

coneywonder · 06/01/2019 18:14

Yeah I'll probably not tell them. The other treatment was a facial so I'm sure that's allowed 🙈

Facial definitely allowed, not as nice as a hot stones but still lovely! ❤️ They often do a scalp massage when the cask mask is on so at least you still get a pamper!!!

I'm an ex beauty therapist and worked at a big hotel spa for a few years. If you tell them you are in the first trimester, they won't touch you. Basically it is down to insurance. Most, if not all, insurers will not cover them for treatments on anyone within their first 12 weeks. Thus meaning that, if they know their 'rules' they won't even give you a manicure. It is then up to you to decide whether to tell them or not. Xx

If it was me? I'd swap the massage for a pregnancy one, if they do them.

You could phone anonymously to ask first (and also enquire about first trimester thing). If they can accommodate pregnancy massage I'd probably phone nearer the time to ask to swap the treatment and (if necessary) fib about how far along you will be (e.g. say 14-15 weeks so outside of first trimester).

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable about concealing the pregnancy altogether, but appreciate I may be in the minority!
