Hot and itchy at 35 weeks - normal?

For the past couple of nights I’ve been itchy all over... sort of like a prickly itch. I’ve not had this as part of the pregnancy.

Is this normal? Or should I raise it with my midwife? My next appointment is on the 15th January

Raise it with your midwife as soon as possible. Itching in pregnancy can be a couple of things, some no problem but they might be able to help treat the itch, at least one (ICP) definitely needs treatment. They can diagnose with a blood test. If it is ICP the sooner it’s identified and treated the better.

Should I wait until my next appointment or ring and book an appointment on Monday?

You need to ring ASAP if your systems correlate to these.

I don’t have any other symptoms just mild itching.

Thanks all! I’ll ring on Monday 😁

@Ahhitchy I had icp with my daughter it started with mild itching on arms and legs then gradually increased all over. Please call on Monday they will get you in for bloods to look at your liver/bile levels. It could be nothing but not worth the risk. If it is icp they can give you medication and monitor levels and delivery of baby before 37-38 x

Or even call the antenatal unit at the hospital tomorrow.

Snoz · 05/01/2019 20:33

Where is the itching?

Ahhitchy · 05/01/2019 20:46

Itching is all over my body (although my hands and feet feel fine)

I do suffer from eczema but this is a different type of itch

I have some itching too (35 weeks tomorrow) mainly on my arms and a bit on my lower back. I do get a bit itchy sometimes especially in winter with dry skin so it’s hard to know whether to worry

Presumably if I moisturise and it goes away then it’s nothing serious?

I think I may call GP on Monday too!

Mayjane5 · 05/01/2019 21:00

My itching didn’t start on hands and feet it can occur anywhere, so please go in and get seen x

Mayjane5 · 05/01/2019 21:03

Icp support is a good fb page for the uk also icp care/itchy moms is very active and supportive on fb x

NuclearPenguin · 05/01/2019 21:17

Definitely get yourself checked out. But try not to worry too much as it may be nothing too serious. At the very end of my pregnancy I ended up with unbearable itching, mainly on my arms and legs. Was just a simple pregnancy rash, which had some fancy name, I happened to see a dermatologist when in hospital for the world's longest induction... it was totally harmless except for the fact I couldn't sleep for the discomfort until I was prescribed some steroid cream and lots of a special moisturiser. Hope it gets sorted soon x

Ahhitchy · 05/01/2019 21:21

Thanks again all! I am feeling particularly anxious at the moment with everything and getting close to the due date

@Ahhitchy try not to worry it could possible turn out to be nothing let us know how you get on x

cja06 · 06/01/2019 10:12

I've had this lately (only 20 weeks) and saw my midwife who did recommend getting urgent blood tests to rule things out. At your stage, perhaps it would be a good idea to get checked out sooner rather than later.

Mayjane5 · 07/01/2019 21:15

@Ahhitchy did you manage to get seen?

Ahhitchy · 07/01/2019 21:46

Evening all!

So I have just got back from the triage as I was suffering from horrendous lower abdominal pain and reduced movements.

I mentioned the itching to the midwife while I was there and they took some bloods so I should find out tomorrow. The midwife said she thinks it’s unlikely given that it’s not on my hands and feet but they took the bloods as a precaution.

Thanks again for everyone’s help! Should find out tomorrow if I get a phone call. If I don’t hear anything then it’s all fine.

OP posts:
Snoz · 07/01/2019 22:20

Are they doing the bloods for the itching or the pain?

Mayjane5 · 08/01/2019 03:24

@Aahitchy glad you got seen and listened too, it’s wrong that they said it’s unlike as not on hands and feet as it doesn’t have to be, mine was elsewhere. Fingers crossed you will be fine and at least you don’t have a long wait x

AliceRR · 08/01/2019 12:09

it’s wrong that they said it’s unlike as not on hands and feet as it doesn’t have to be, mine was elsewhere.

I don’t think the midwife said it can’t be that if not hands and feet just that it’s less likely.

Sounds like they are checking anyway which is good

Hope everything is ok OP
